Formula/BM intake since starting solids

I am 'trying' to not freakout about my kid hardly taking formula lately but it is getting worse as each day goes on. We started a third puree meal because of the drop in formula. I am wondering what your babies are doing since starting solids.

Re: Formula/BM intake since starting solids

  • I'm not sure exactly how much less since I EBF and she doesn't take bottles or sippy cups, but she definitely doesn't want to nurse as much now that she's on solids three times a day (per pedi's direction.)

  • It's hard to remember what she drank before we introduced solids 4 months ago but her dr told me she should get 22 ounces a day...sometimes she only drinks 18. I'm not forcing her!

  • I hear ya'!!!!! My chin nearly dropped to the floor when the babysitter told me he only had 4 oz yesterday! I was expecting him to be up a ton last night and he STTN!
  • We bumped up to 3 tablespoons of oatmeal and 2 oz of fruit in the a.m. 4 oz at lunch and dinner. So 10 oz and 3 T of oatmeal.

So, dumb question:  Oz by weight or by volume? Or are they basically the same (searching brain for physics lessons circa 1993)

LOL, no idea. The jar says 4 oz on it.

  • She is nursing much less. I give her a sippy cup during her meals with breast milk and she drinks 2-3oz then. She is up to 3 meals a day.
  • The same but we don't do a ton of solids
  • Id say at the most 26oz a day, some days its a bit less.  He eats solids 3 times a day and gets an afternoon snack as well. We also give him some water in a sippy cup at meal times too.
  • Audrey is drinking 3 sometimes 4 6oz bottles each day. She eats solids 3 times  a day plus crackers here and there. She rarely has pureed anymore and usually eats what we eat.

  • Don't freak out...remember they go from doubling their birth weight by 6 months to only tripling it by 1 year. That is a big difference in growth. So long as your little one is drinking at least 20oz daily you should be good. My Ped wants 24 but said once she was fully on 3 meals (solids) that 20 was good. Right now she's at about 26-30 with 3 meals.

  • He downs his wake up bottle. But the other two bottles during the day he barely has any interest in. So I told DH to make meals with whatever is left from the bottles. LO is still on the low side for weight so I don't want him to take in any less calories. Plus he is more interested in solids.

  • She takes about the same amount. I space the food and bottles out. So she'll eat about half way between bottles. Sometimes she'll leave an ounce or two from a bottle but is still taking roughly 25-30 oz.

This exactly! I try to space out his bottles as much as possible so he'll drink more.  On average, B drinks about 24 oz. a day.

  • My LO was drinking 36-40 oz of formula per day.  He is now drinking 26-30 oz daily and eating 2-3 meals plus puffs.

  • We EBF but he nurses for less time now that we are doing solids 3x/day. It worried me at first but he's happy, growing, and has plenty of wet diapers. I'm more worried about my supply.
  • Yep, she decreased when she started eating well.  Her ped said this was fine, and actually good, because she likes to see them start to rely on food as they get closer to one.

Mine was never a big eater.  At her max intake, she only took 26-28 ounces, and now she has dropped to 16-20.  She has four bottles per day.  She eats three meals a day, a mix of purees and finger foods, and has some little snacks, too, with a little bit of water.

  • I've actually been freaking out about this also, so I'm glad you started this thread!
Em has been on 3 meals for awhile and his BM intake has stayed the same. Well, all of a sudden he has decided not to drink milk. The babysitter had to force 4 oz into him today, mostly by getting him to drink it out of a cup.
I was worried so I called his pedi and he didn't seem concerned. She said that as long as he is having enough wet diapers and isn't throwing up/having diarrhea, then he is fine. I'm still freaking out though since I know that most of his nutrition is supposed to come from milk!

  • Same here! I BF when I'm at home with T, so I'm not positive how much he eats but I know over the last month or so its less than he was eating. He eats a ton first thing in the morning and right before bed but otherwise he nurses every 4 hours or so and often doesn't eat for very long. He eats 3 meals a day but sometimes I end up not giving him a third meal because I need him to eat more BM. I'm glad you started this thread. Ill try to not stress out so much about it.
  • C has been drinking much less during the day over the past week and I'm not sure if it has to do with his solids intake or the fact that he is very easily distracted! But he makes up for it in the MOTN, drinking 2 6oz bottles. Ugh...I feel like he will never sttn at this rate.

This, except Pedi didn't direct it, G did.

  • So we're still on 2 meals a day, and even though we offer her 2oz of solids, she rarely eats all of it...I think that's probably why we haven't decreased in formula, but I'd imagine if you add up the total amount they eat (solids and milk/formula) in oz, it ends up evening out.

I'm guessing this is where we are too. He eats 15 oz at daycare and a 5 oz bottle before bed and nurses at least 2-3 other times. And eats 3 meals. He's also 22.5 pounds lol
  • E is EBF with the occasional bit of formula in a sippy cup so I'm not sure of amounts but she drinks hardly any milk through the day.

I would estimate she gets about 20oz in total based on when I pumped.
