Is there a way to tell if you need stitches? Ds hit his head and it's a small hole, it bled a lot but head wounds do. Poor kid has the flu and needs a break:( he was climbing on a stationary bike and fell and hit his head in the back. It's been about 30 min and it stopped bleeding about 15 min later. And he's just real sad and tired.

  • Poor kid. I don't have experience in this area but I wanted to say I hope it heals fast for him. I dread these upcoming injuries. I don't know if I am going to handle them well.

  • Stitching can reduce the chance of infection and reduce scarring. I'd take him in.

  • I would call the pedi and see how they want you to proceed. DD ran into a wall in September, and actually gave herself a concussion. Better to be safe than sorry, IMO. Hope the little guy feels better soon!

  • I agree with the PP's, call the pedi, and see what they say.  The part about the head, and being tired after the fall would concern me.

  • I'd take him in because he hit his head and is now tired, and to make sure that deep wound doesn't need extra cleaning.

  • Oh no poor guy :(

  • I'd definitely take him in to have it looked at.  They will probably want to clean it and make sure it doesn't need a suture.  Both my boys had staples in their heads last year.  I didn't think the cuts seemed deep enough for that but b/c it was on their heads the chances of it continuing to open up, and therefore not heal properly, goes up.

    Poor guy. :(

  • It looks deep enough to need stitching or staples to me, but the pic is blurry.  But at least it's under his hair.
  • :( sorry for your LO.
damn that looks like it hurt!

I'd take him in. I'm not one to rush to the doc but yes, that would get me to go
  • Hope he feels better! I'd take him in too.

  • I'm giving a big WTF to this post...

I agree.  The last thing I'd be doing if that happened would be snapping pics for the bump. But then I'm in the better safe than sorry camp for most things.

I hope he gets to the docs and feels better soon.  Poor little guy.

  • I'm feeling uneasy about him being asleep even if it is his nap.
  • I have three nurses in our family, one charge nurse in the er. He came over since he lives 15 min away. He said head wounds bleed a ton, ds does not need stitches. Just cleaned him up, no concussion signs or anything. I did call dr too and explained brother came to see and they talked. All is fine. I took a pic to send to my bro to ask a question and just put it on here too to see what y'all thought. First time he has a head gash I freaked and it bled lots like this, it was nbd. So I didnt wNt to over react again and freak out.

  • Sorry if I pissed anyone off, I wasn't able to update sooner. I just wanted to know what y'all would do, if I was over reacting or not.

  • I couldn't get a hold of them at first. One was napping, two working. So I got a hold of him right when posting this. Just trying not to freak out, before I had on a head cut. It bled a lot like this one but it wasn't a big deal. So I didn't want to rush off since he was acting ok, just bled a lot.

  • Is he still okay?

Sleeping post head injuries scares me.

  • I only was second guessing since he was not acting like he had a concussion. He hit his head before and it bled a lot like I said and I did freak. It was just a good scratch and bled a lot. So I didn't want to over exaggerate plus I was trying to keep calm. He was crying and I just got him to lay down, and was able to look at it. It's hard to tell when stitches are needed in hair.

  • It's been about 2 hours and he just laid down to nap about 30 min ago. He's acting 100% normal. I have already checked on him twice and he's good. Sister said not to let him sleep more than 2 hours.

  • That picture should be removed. It's no way my child would suffer a head injury and my thought is to take a picture and put it on the bump for opinions from a bunch of strangers. Wtf!!!!!!

  • Take him to the doctor. Now. The back of your head doesn't take impact as well your face.
  • I went ahead and took him to see his pedi. He is fine. Just a bump. No stitches. No issues.

The worst concussion I ever had was from leaning back with DS and bumping the back of my head on a chair. I've been launched off horses and in some bad car wrecks, but that little bump made it hard to get out of bed for a week and left me with symptoms for months.

I'm glad you had him checked and he's okay!

  • So good to hear that! Hope your LO is feeling better soon :)
  • If I had thought he was in grave danger I wouldn't have posted. I just did while waiting on brother to call back and deciding what to do. I was on the fence because it didn't look too bad just a lot of blood. I often come here for advice or help. Just wondering what others would have done. I'm not an unfit mother I promise. I just wanted to see if other moms would go right in or no. I'm thankful he's ok and happy
