1st Trimester

Anyone have to stand 8+ hrs at work?

How will you deal with this?

I have to stand for 8 hours sometimes a few extra.

Will you ask for a chair?

Re: Anyone have to stand 8+ hrs at work?

  • yeah I am a hairstylist! THIS SUCKS! I will be sitting as much as possible.
  • I am a nurse and I work 12 hour shifts.  Sometimes I am on my feet for 12 hours straight, sometimes it isn't too bad.  I sit down to chart, and grab a chair when I can, and take it easy at home the next day if it was a particularly rough shift.  I work in an ICU environment, so I can't really ask for a chair.

  • Yeah I'm asking for a chair!

  • I am a resident and daily work 14 hours shifts all standing and 1-2 days a week work 24 hr shifts when I don't sit down.  I am buying TED hose to keep from getting edema (fluid) at the bottom of my legs during the long shift.  It was also help protect against vericose veins.  Good luck!
  • 9-10 hour shifts here. Once I get farther along..like, 7 1/2 months or really uncomfortable, I will move to an area where I can sit.
  • I'm in surgery for 8+ hours a day and like DCA, I'm buying TEDs (or swiping them from the hospital) and sitting down and putting my feet up between cases.  Luckily, I'm not a resident anymore (I'm a fellow, with a little nicer shedule - no in-house call and someone to do my scut).  I will be on a plastic surgery rotation in my 7th month and I think they're gonna have to do the long cases without me.

BTW, my boss just had a baby on xmas eve, worked up until the 22nd - operating or in the office for 8+ hours a day and she did great!  Her advice was to keep well fed, well hydrated and wear your support hose!

  • I am a teacher so most of my day is spent standing, running around, and at times squating on the floor.  I am going to try and spend more time in a chair or on a stool.

  • I was having to do this early on. I work retail.. bleh. My manager insisted on letting me have a stool to sit on when I felt the need too.

Now that i've gotten a little further along my ankles have decided they want to go through the swelling process early so I am very grateful for my stool and my doctor has also wrote a note saying I can't work over 6.5 hours in a 24 hour period which sucks as far as money goes but it's amazing on my ankles. (:

  • im in retail management so i dont get the option of a chair..lol. my back hurts like hell and so do my legs and feet...sometimes after i get home and sit down for a bit, i cannot get back up...but i also have a pinched lower back nerve and a weak disc that slipped about a year and a half ago and hasnt been right since :(

  • I'm an STNA in a nursing home. I'm on my feet and walking plus lifting 32 hours a week. It's been pretty tough so far, but it's been a little easier lately. I'm hoping that it's the whole not so exhausting 2nd tri kicking in already. I'm planning on investing in support hose as well because my ankles are already swelling to the point where I need new shoes. I honestly don't know how I'm going to stand it later on in this pregnancy. I just try to keep snacking when I can and drink lots of fluids and sit when I can.
  • Ya, I have 10 hour shifts and all I do is stand.  I walk around a little, but mostly am standing in front of a computer.  I could ask for a stool, but honestly, I move too much for one - just a couple steps to my right and left constantly, that it would not be convenient.  I am supposed to wear dress shoes, but I wear sneakers.
  • Yes, I am a pharmacist, and I work anywhere from 7-14 hours a day, standing all day.  I'm nervous for my 14s, especially when I'm farther along, but I guess I'll just wear my Danskos, buy some support hose, and sit whenever I can (rarely).  Good luck to all of you!
  • I work in a cardiac OR and sometimes stand 6+ hrs at a time. I plan on wearing the support stocking as well (even though I already wear them, I'm trying to ward off vericose veins) I also have a really comfortable pair of cloggs. If I need a break I plan on asking for it!
  • I'm retail management too - so I generally don't sit at all during the day... but with the economy as it is, I won't have to worry about getting a chair, since my hours are being drastically cut....  if it picks back up, I really don't know what I'm gonna do to get off my feet more....  I guess I'll just have to wait and see how it goes!!

  • I am a nurse as well, I work 12 hr shifts, nights & days, with no set rotation. I am up on my feet a lot. I work L&D so its a fairly physical job. I try to sit in the room when I can on a stool or when I do my charting. I am trying not to lift but I haven't shard my news yet so others are not so understanding of me asking for extra help. I plan on getting support stockings as well.

  • Well, I'm a nurse as well and work 12 hour shifts. Other than charting time and lunch time I can't really ask for a chair.  I do plan on wearing support stockings once I get further along.  Plan on trying to prevent extra swelling and vericose veins.  I have all plans to work up until I deliver though.
