For those with identical twins

I have a silly question. Are your twins exactly the same in every way looks wise or is there some slight differences? I still don't know if my boys are ID or not and its driving me crazy. To me they look totally different but thats mostly because of the IUGR in Colton. The only things that I can see between the two of them is ear shape. Cayden looks like his was bent slightly. Its even harder to tell because these two look pretty much the exact same as our oldest son. Even my husband couldn't tell if photos were of the twins or of our toddler when he was the same age. I even would have second guessed myself if it wasn't for knowing when I took the photos! However I have some where the twins look nothing alike ( maybe because of the weight?). Im really considering the genetic testing so I can settle it! But with the 2 pound weight difference its really hard to tell!

Re: For those with identical twins

  • I felt the same way! I and my H were the only one who saw the differences. Isla has a strawberry birthmark on her eyebrow and Halle doesn't. Otherwise, they're the exact same weight and have 1/4in difference in height. Same amount of teeth, hit milestones relatively at the same time. I was convinced they were frat since they were di/di. Test results showed that they were identical!

I say, if they share 90% of their similarities, test them!

  • Oh, they definitely have differences! As my smaller twin is catching up to her sister in size (she was 10oz smaller at birth and had some setbacks in the nicu that resulted in more weight loss), I think they look more alike. Their ears are different shapes, one has quite a bit more hair, and their face shapes are different.

When looking at individual features, I do think my twins' eye, nose, and mouth shapes are very similar.

  • My girls have slightly different head shapes because of one trying to escape through my hip bone, but the older they get the more their heads are matching up.  Jo also had cherry eyes until about a month ago and is a little lighter than Evie. Other than that they are unmistakably identical, I am the only one who knows who is who, everyone else (including poor husband) has to ask or look at their toes (I keep Evies painted).

  • Thanks everyone! I think I will get them tested. I thought I was overthinking it being that crazy mom analyzing every single detail on them to figure this out! It's so strange because I swear sometimes there is no way I can really tell them apart then the next minute they look totally different. It's mostly pictures where they look different. Tomorrow I will post some photos when I am on a regular computer and not mobile! There are some physical differences though ..minor ones that threw me off because I didn't know of IDs could have any differences. But then again they look so much like our oldest singleton that one day I would guess they all look like trips when they are in their 30's! Any company that is recommended for the testing?

This is the company I think we will use. I'm glad to read that some of you even have trouble telling your twins apart. My husband and I are foster parents (hoping to adopt them eventually) to twins (we got them straight from the NICU) and I have been feeling SO guilty that I have to see their hair to tell them apart (Jules has more hair, although now Liz seems to be catching up). I keep Liz's toe nail painted so we always have a back up to tell them apart. I have been feeling like a lesser mom for always having to look twice when deciding who is who!

4/11 Started adoption process for 2 siblings through DCF. 10/12 Found out we are licensed! 12/14 Brought 3 week old identical twin girls home from the hospital.  Could be at least until Summer 1015 til we know if they are forever ours
  • I feel like my identical twins look nothing alike....but when I look at pics of them (esp when they were younger) I always end up saying "dang, I guess they are identical!" It's weird; there has always been a significant size difference, but the only other identifiable difference is that N's hair seems slightly lighter, but that's just b/c it isn't quite as thick as L's. They were mo/di so there's no question that they're ID....maybe b/c they're such different people I think of them as more different than alike.

I agree w/ PPs that if you are questioning, you might as well test.

  • My IDs look very different to DH and I, but others have a hard time. Facial features are the same but head shapes are different. One was IUGR so there's a 2 lb difference as well. One has scars from IV infiltrates so we won't have to mark them even if it gets hard to tell.

  • Here is some pictures from birth until now. Colton is slowly catching up and changing looking more and more like Cayden. Part of me is like oh there is no way there are ID the part is like yup they def are! Had to take them off my Instagram and Facebook since DH won't surrender the laptop (fantasy football lol) but anyhow I think I'm just going to go for it and get the test! @SWA80 the older yours get do they start to look more alike?

  • Mine had a size difference so it was easy to tell the difference. But as the gap closed and they've gotten bigger, even I have trouble sometimes. I'd say if people are saying they can't tell the difference, get the test done. They always look different to you and DH because you see them on a daily basis. Mine have slightly different head shapes but everything else is the same.
