Naive Pumping Questions

I'm doing this for the first time and am unsure about a few things. I'm sure some of these are probably dumb questions but I appreciate your input! 1. Timing. My DS nurses about every three hours. I'm trying to build up a stockpile so my DH can feed him with the bottle once at night. This morning my nursing session started at 5:45 on my right breast then I switched sides for just a couple of minutes to my left. The session ended around 6:20. I then pumped my left breast from 7:05-7:25. My DS will likely be ready to nurse from my left at 8:45. Is this timing ok to replenish my supply?? 2. Can you add freshly pumped BM to a container already in the fridge?

Re: Naive Pumping Questions

  • If you can it is best to pump immediately after a feeding. Don't mix milk that is different temps. Chill the pumped milk before combining.

  • Thanks. I should add that after his nursing session, I changed his diaper then soothed him back to sleep so I could get the pump set up and going.

Question 1 is a good one for Amy G, but my understanding is that more frequent pumping/feedings lead to a better supply. I had to cut back, actually, because I had an oversupply from pumping in between. Question 2--they're supposed to be the same temp before you combine.

Ditto asking AmyG, but this is my understanding too, that there is always enough milk for baby and they are much more efficient than the pump anyway. I think I remember in one of AmyG's posts that a lot of the milk is made on-demand while baby is nursing.

  • If you can juggle, I find pumping on one side while feeding on the other works really well because baby triggers a really good let down.

  • Per my LC, I pump 30 minutes after my morning feeding to build a supply.
