Benadryl for an 8 week old?

DS has been pretty sick since Sunday and he's had congestion and a cough that's been progressively getting worse.  We called the pediatrician just a little while ago and she told us to give him a little Benedryl to help relieve some of the congestion.  I was under the impression that recent studies had shown that it could be potentially dangerous for infants to take Benedryl.  I did some google searches but everything I read pretty much was in regards to sedating babies with benedryl, not in reference to them actually needing it for decongestion purposes.

Has anyone else's pedi recommended this, or have you given it to a baby this young?  I'm probably not going to do it but I'm just curious as to what you've heard or done.

  • I was specifically told no to benedryl at 8 weeks. They recommended sitting in the bathroom with the shower going as hot as possible to steam it up and sit in there. Plus saline drops and using the nasal aspirator.

  • No, and I wouldn't give it to him even if they did.

  • I would try a humidifier, saline drops, and/or aspiration first.  8 weeks is REALLY young.
  • Our Ped said no benadryl. There are these things called shower soothers that are made by vicks. They are at walgreens, rite aid, walmart and they go in the shower. It helped my daughter when she was sick. We would just run hot water over them and sit in the bath room with her. You really only need a half of one or they get pretty strong smelling.
