gas or could it be reflux?

DS is 8 weeks old and has been very gassy for 4 weeks straight. He cries when his stomach is spasming and can sometimes pass the gas. He has never had a big spit up problem but I have noticed that he will spit up a large amount if I lay him on his back after a feeding. Lately he has been crying during his bottle and is very uncomfortable. Is this just gas? Are reflux and gas connected? I go to the pedi on Tuesday.

Re: gas or could it be reflux?

  • DD has reflux. She would have wet burps. Cough & fussy while nursing. Arch her back.

Her reflux got worse around 8 weeks but the pedi said a little is normal. We went back a month later demanding medicaiton b/c she was so uncomfortable.

Google reflux symptoms & see if it fits. Once I did that, I knew that's what she had. She had all the symptoms on the page!

  • I had the same experience as BabyCakes - it happened at 6 weeks. Suddenly DS started crying during feedings and arching backwards and crying painfully - it was clear that this was different from gas pains. He would also cough and stop swallowing during feedings, which we came to understand meant that he was refluxing the milk back up and couldn't get it down. Again, painful cries were the big difference. He has "silent" reflux because he doesn't spit up much at all.

Call the pedi - it could just be something you're eating, but if it keeps getting worse, they can help.

  • if you are breastfeeding, it could be something in your diet. If you're formula feeding, it could be a milk protein allergy.

Reflux doesn't present as gas...so if the issue is all gassiness, try a different formula or try eliminating things from your diet (the biggest culprit is dairy).
