Infertility

CMV Positive

We were hoping to start our IVF cycle in February but since I tested positive to having a recent active infection of CMV they told me I have to wait a month and test again to see if it’s negative.  Has anyone else gone through this?  How long did you have to wait until you could do IVF?  I plan to ask the nurse but what happens if I get an active infection of CMV while I’m pregnant?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The nurse says that we can start the cycle to retrieve my eggs and have them frozen then finish the cycle when I’m no longer CMV positive.  Isn’t better to use fresh eggs though?

Re: CMV Positive

  • Hi there. I know a bit about CMV because I had an egg donor with an active infection and we had to cancel the cycle. If a CMV infection crosses the placenta it can cause things like stillbirth, birth defects, and mental retardation -- definitely nothing to mess around with. It can take as little as a few weeks or as long as six months for the infection to go away (which is why we chose a new egg donor when faced with the situation). Hopefully you will clear it quickly and not have to wait to long to transfer. You may already have had it a while so it might well be gone by the next time you test. Sorry you have to deal with this. CMV is no big deal in an adult; it's just the timing that is rotten.
