Those who have kids already, how much was your hospital bill for delivery and how much did you have to pay out of pocket? Mine was about 55k for a normal vaginal delivery and I paid 2,500 out of pocket after insurance. This time I'm expecting to pay 8k out of pocket after insurance.

Baby Boy due October 2017
Thanks for the clarification.... haven't lived here all my life and didn't know that....genius.
Still prefer to not have to worry about having to take out a second mortgage to have a child and having the means to stay home for a full year.
A second mortgage does not buy you a home... straight from the interwebz:
A second mortgage typically refers to a secured loan (or mortgage) that is subordinate to another loan against the same property. Second mortgages are subordinate because, if the loan goes into default, the first mortgage gets paid off first before the second mortgage. Thus, second mortgages are riskier for lenders and thus generally come with a higher interest rate than first mortgages.... blah blah blah
So yes, I prefer not to have to be out of pocket $10000 plus interest.

Granted the gov't doesn't give you a full salary on Mat/Pat benefits (leave is unpaid but protects your job, but then you apply for the benefits), and there is a maximum, but it's better than nothing and a lot of companies will top-up the benefits to have your salary closer to norm.
I love hanging around TB, and a lot of the topics have made me even more grateful to be Canadian. (Not saying it sucks in the US of A - just saying I'm even more appreciative of my own country & it's health care system after seeing what you ladies have to deal with it in the States)
Amen.

At my last pregnancy though they said the same thing and I kept getting bills after with additional services and equipment they needed to use in my situation that wasn't covered. In the end it was probably $500-$600 out of pocket.

You keep getting bills because that $250 you paid out of pocket just covered your prenatal care and your OB's services. It doesn't include things like the hospital room and board, OR costs, anesthesia costs, pediatrician costs, drug costs and the cost of whatever other services you encounter at the hospital. The costs you find out at your intake are only the costs for you OB's services at delivery and prenatal care. That's the only thing they actually know the costs of (most OB offices charge a flat global fee for this). The intake person has no idea what your actual hospital costs are going to be.
We paid $0 for my vaginal hospital birth. My insurance covered every cent.
I paid nothing. Not a penny for a single visit or my c/s or my private room. God bless unions.
Loving the USA vs. Canada talk. Need some excitement up in here, there are not enough loonies posting on 1st Tri these days.
