Not trying to scare anybody but sometimes people don't think something could really happen to them. 9/10 it's been listeria and we aren't talking about poor people. It can happen to anybody (even people who don't buy their sandwiches at gas stations). Just be smart! Nothing is worth losing your baby! (Or a $500000 Nicu Bill)

I would be curious to know what source the listeria came from. I highly doubt that 9/10 listeria cases came from deli meat - I would be willing to bet fruits, vegetables, or soft cheeses are more likely the culprit.

I am a pretty risk-adverse, cautious person, not just through pregnancy, but in day to day life. I try to make smart, healthy choices every day. That being said, I refuse to live my life believing that if I eat a turkey sandwich that has been provided from a clean, reputable establishment, that I, or my unborn child, will die or face a $5,000,000 NICU bill. COULD it happen? Sure. But, I could get into a fatal car accident on my drive home from work tonight. I could be murdered by a robber in my suburbia neighborhood. I could contract listeria from the spinach I will have in my salad tonight. I could suffer an aneurism tonight in my sleep. But, I still have to drive home, I will still eat my spinach, and I will still sleep without fear that I will die in bed. Nothing in life is risk free, it comes down to legitimately weighing risk versus reward or punishment for every single decision made on a daily basis. Based on my comfort levels, research, and the advice of my OB and midwife, I feel confident that the reward of a turkey sandwich far outweighs the risk of contracting listeria. And if I lose my baby, or have a $5,000,000 NICU bill, please feel free to say "told you so". Until then....eat turkey if you want, or don't. I don't really care, but to make mothers who are trying to do their best feel unfit or incompetent is just ridiculous.

    Amen! I applaud you!

  • I had a foot long subway cold cut trio with lettuce and red onion, unheated, for dinner tonight. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Lurking, but what does being poor have to do with anything?
@cruelsound obviously only poor people eat lunch meat. Rich people eatwell done steak for lunch.
    Yummm.... steak....

(I have nothing else to add to this thread - eat whatever you like ladies.  My mantra - don't be stupid.  If the place LOOKS like it'll make you sick, then don't eat there.  Same thing I'd say as if you were driving, and the road suddenly looked like a demolition derby - don't drive there.  Don't be stupid - consider the risks you are taking)
