Not trying to scare anybody but sometimes people don't think something could really happen to them. 9/10 it's been listeria and we aren't talking about poor people. It can happen to anybody (even people who don't buy their sandwiches at gas stations). Just be smart! Nothing is worth losing your baby! (Or a $500000 Nicu Bill)
So, what you're saying is you're a nurse who cares for babies born at 20 weeks. And 9 out 10 of those babies pass due to listeria? Somehow I'm having a hard time believing that.
Never mind. I misread. However, I still call bullshit.
Sorry I didn't see the other question. I've worked in the NICN for 6 years- At least one child a year. Maybe doesn't seem like a lot to most people but l just want moms to realize that it can be a reality.
I don't think it's worth the risk and it really isn't that hard to zap your meat in the microwave for a minute... Of course you can get sick from a number of other foods but why not reduce your risk as much as possible?
I have a friend who got violently ill during pregnancy from food poisoning and her daughter ended up having pretty serious learning disabilities and is now enrolled in a special needs program; they think because mom got so sick (but who knows for sure).
Also, all this talk of wine and beer made me a little anxious for the end of June! I can't wait to celebrate the baby with a glass of champagne! <:-P
After all this talk yesterday, I went out and had a ham and cheese today with Miracle Whip. It was Ah-ma-zing. And every time I have miracle whip, I think of Stewie:

So... you see a majority of every year's cases then at your hospital?
Yeah.. I'm pretty sure there hasn't been a lunch meat related fetal death in the US in the last decade... Soooo... Where exactly do you work?
This is the only number I could find in relation to deli meat. The most recent cause if Listeria was cantaloupe in 2011.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there are about 1,600 cases of listeriosis annually in the United States. Compared to 1996-1998, the incidence of listeriosis had declined by about 38% by 2003. However, illnesses and deaths continue to occur. On average from 1998-2008, 2.4 outbreaks per year were reported to the CDC. A large outbreak occurred in 2002, when 54 illnesses, 8 deaths, and 3 fetal deaths in 9 states were found to be associated with consumption of contaminated turkey deli meat.[11]
The 2008 Canadian listeriosis outbreak, a widespread outbreak of listeriosis in Canada linked to a Maple Leaf Foods plant in Toronto, Ontario killed 23 people and there were 57 total confirmed cases.[12]
I couldn't find any recent info. Yum, lunchmeat.

@almendarez - you cannot be serious. Her daughter has learning disabilities... because her mom got food poisoning while she was pregnant with her. Just...no. Go back to lurking.

Good thing my American hoagie doesn't contain turkey meat! [end sarcasm]

eta bc words are totes hard
I got food poisoning from some left out pumpkin pie when pregnant with my daughter, maybe I should start blaming her autism, sensory disorder, and anxiety on that.
@megk82 - of course you should. This one piece of anecdotal evidence proves that all food poisoning gives children learning disabilities. I hope you're living in a plastic bubble for this one.

What's your deal?
It's amazing how cruel everyone on this board is to each other just for stating what they've heard or their personal opinion. A FORUM is a place for open discussion. Telling someone to F off because they have a different view than you is very closed minded and isn't very good way to have a conversation.

i avoid it all. any risk isn't worth it to me. but i am a self-blamer, so if god forbid something went wrong, i would go back through everything that i did and wonder if i caused it. some people are more relaxed about things than me, and that is fine for them, but i know myself and it's just not worth it to me. won't be the first or last time i sacrifice my own happiness for the kids. ha!
i have made a couple hot turkey sandwiches this time around, though. every pregnancy i look forward to cold cuts after delivery. and alcohol. of any kind.

I seem to have missed this part. Another example of your exaggerations?
I have no deal. Although I did get some super cute flats at 75% off the other day; cha-ching!
I understand that you weren't saying that the food poisoning absolutely caused the child's disabilities, but, come on - your point was that turkey/listeria is so dangerous that if we eat it we risk our children suffering consequences like disabilities. Don't pretend like that's not what you were saying.
Also, the lurking suggestion was not an F off. It was an actual recommendation. You seem to think that fear-mongering is a good way to convince people you're right. I don't agree.

Everything could have bacteria on it. Like PP said, you risk of getting listeria from bagged lettuce/spinach is way higher. But if you don't feel comfortable eating certain things, then don't.
I agree with this. If you don't feel comfortable eating it then don't. If you aren't worried then go for it.
If you don't feel comfortable eating it than don't. If you do, then do. I don't, so I don't. That's it. Not trying to scare anyone and change anyone's mind. Everyone already has their mind set anyway.
What did I exaggerate? I mentioned that my friend and her doctors think her food poisoning caused developmental problems. I didn't make anything up.
Telling someone to "go back to lurking" i.e. stop respond or go away or F off isn't an exaggeration.
Ha. Next time I tell a coworker to fuck off I better not get in trouble "um, sir,..that's Obviously the same thing as "stop responding to emails when you aren't cc'd"". Thanks for the clarification.
I'm a 20 week pregnant neonatal intensive care RN. Be sarcastic if you want but I see beautiful term babies die AFTER birth from contamination their mothers came across during pregnancy. Eat at your own baby's risk. Not worth it to me.
I guess my dr must not see as many women as you do. She's practiced for close to 30 years and she said she's had two cases of listeria in her patients, both lived as did their babies.
BTW, I live in UT. The Mormon capital of the world where they breed like rabbits and I have never once heard of a baby dying because their mother had cold turkey while pregnant. And I know a LOT of women having families consisting of 5+ children.

I would be curious to know what source the listeria came from. I highly doubt that 9/10 listeria cases came from deli meat - I would be willing to bet fruits, vegetables, or soft cheeses are more likely the culprit.
I am a pretty risk-adverse, cautious person, not just through pregnancy, but in day to day life. I try to make smart, healthy choices every day. That being said, I refuse to live my life believing that if I eat a turkey sandwich that has been provided from a clean, reputable establishment, that I, or my unborn child, will die or face a $5,000,000 NICU bill. COULD it happen? Sure. But, I could get into a fatal car accident on my drive home from work tonight. I could be murdered by a robber in my suburbia neighborhood. I could contract listeria from the spinach I will have in my salad tonight. I could suffer an aneurism tonight in my sleep. But, I still have to drive home, I will still eat my spinach, and I will still sleep without fear that I will die in bed. Nothing in life is risk free, it comes down to legitimately weighing risk versus reward or punishment for every single decision made on a daily basis. Based on my comfort levels, research, and the advice of my OB and midwife, I feel confident that the reward of a turkey sandwich far outweighs the risk of contracting listeria. And if I lose my baby, or have a $5,000,000 NICU bill, please feel free to say "told you so". Until then....eat turkey if you want, or don't. I don't really care, but to make mothers who are trying to do their best feel unfit or incompetent is just ridiculous.

Clearly all the listeriosis cases go to her hospital, but none of the fetal alcohol syndrome cases
