How many babies have you seen die specifically from listeria after birth? (Serious question not snark, I am genuinely curious)

ETA: I meant to quote @Sbanksjohnson but apparently my mind forgot..

  • Not trying to scare anybody but sometimes people don't think something could really happen to them. 9/10 it's been listeria and we aren't talking about poor people. It can happen to anybody (even people who don't buy their sandwiches at gas stations). Just be smart! Nothing is worth losing your baby! (Or a $500000 Nicu Bill)

So, what you're saying is you're a nurse who cares for babies born at 20 weeks. And 9 out 10 of those babies pass due to listeria? Somehow I'm having a hard time believing that.

Never mind. I misread. However, I still call bullshit.

    (Commence lurking)
  • Sorry I didn't see the other question. I've worked in the NICN for 6 years- At least one child a year. Maybe doesn't seem like a lot to most people but l just want moms to realize that it can be a reality.
  • I don't think it's worth the risk and it really isn't that hard to zap your meat in the microwave for a minute... Of course you can get sick from a number of other foods but why not reduce your risk as much as possible?

I have a friend who got violently ill during pregnancy from food poisoning and her daughter ended up having pretty serious learning disabilities and is now enrolled in a special needs program; they think because mom got so sick (but who knows for sure).

Also, all this talk of wine and beer made me a little anxious for the end of June! I can't wait to celebrate the baby with a glass of champagne! <:-P

  • After all this talk yesterday, I went out and had a ham and cheese today with Miracle Whip. It was Ah-ma-zing. And every time I have miracle whip, I think of Stewie: image

So... you see a majority of every year's cases then at your hospital?

Yeah.. I'm pretty sure there hasn't been a lunch meat related fetal death in the US in the last decade... Soooo... Where exactly do you work?

  • Well, now I really, really want a turkey sandwich.  Yep, I think I'm making a trip down to the store...
  • You're all incorrect about Subway.

    Quizno's is better.
Um, excuse me, but I think you meant to say Jimmy John's.
Um, EXCUSE ME, but no. Wanna have a fight about it so all of TB can witness it????

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

^ exactly. One child a year is not dying in your nicu from lunch meat related causes.

Edit: stole the perfect gif from @elittler ;)

This IS the perfect time for that gif. I'm so glad it was used in the best possible way!!

This is the only number I could find in relation to deli meat. The most recent cause if Listeria was cantaloupe in 2011.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there are about 1,600 cases of listeriosis annually in the United States. Compared to 1996-1998, the incidence of listeriosis had declined by about 38% by 2003. However, illnesses and deaths continue to occur. On average from 1998-2008, 2.4 outbreaks per year were reported to the CDC. A large outbreak occurred in 2002, when 54 illnesses, 8 deaths, and 3 fetal deaths in 9 states were found to be associated with consumption of contaminated turkey deli meat.[11]
The 2008 Canadian listeriosis outbreak, a widespread outbreak of listeriosis in Canada linked to a Maple Leaf Foods plant in Toronto, Ontario killed 23 people and there were 57 total confirmed cases.[12]

I couldn't find any recent info. Yum, lunchmeat.

Good thing my American hoagie doesn't contain turkey meat! [end sarcasm]

@almendarez - you cannot be serious. Her daughter has learning disabilities... because her mom got food poisoning while she was pregnant with her. Just...no. Go back to lurking.

    What's your deal?

It's amazing how cruel everyone on this board is to each other just for stating what they've heard or their personal opinion. A FORUM is a place for open discussion. Telling someone to F off because they have a different view than you is very closed minded and isn't very good way to have a conversation.

I got food poisoning from some left out pumpkin pie when pregnant with my daughter, maybe I should start blaming her autism, sensory disorder, and anxiety on that.

@megk82 - of course you should. This one piece of anecdotal evidence proves that all food poisoning gives children learning disabilities. I hope
you're living in a plastic bubble for this one.

    Close enough.

  • i avoid it all. any risk isn't worth it to me. but i am a self-blamer, so if god forbid something went wrong, i would go back through everything that i did and wonder if i caused it. some people are more relaxed about things than me, and that is fine for them, but i know myself and it's just not worth it to me. won't be the first or last time i sacrifice my own happiness for the kids. ha!

i have made a couple hot turkey sandwiches this time around, though. every pregnancy i look forward to cold cuts after delivery. and alcohol. of any kind. ;)

  • What did I exaggerate? I mentioned that my friend and her doctors think her food poisoning caused developmental problems. I didn't make anything up.

Telling someone to "go back to lurking" i.e. stop respond or go away or F off isn't an exaggeration.

    All of this listeria talk!

  • Ok, so everyone who agrees with your opinion is right.

    Like I said before:

Everything could have bacteria on it.  Like PP said, you risk of getting listeria from bagged lettuce/spinach is way higher.  But if you don't feel comfortable eating certain things, then don't.
I agree with this. If you don't feel comfortable eating it then don't. If you aren't worried then go for it.
If you don't feel comfortable eating it than don't. If you do, then do. I don't, so I don't. That's it. Not trying to scare anyone and change anyone's mind. Everyone already has their mind set anyway.

Ha. Next time I tell a coworker to fuck off I better not get in trouble "um, sir,..that's Obviously the same thing as "stop responding to emails when you aren't cc'd"". Thanks for the clarification.

  • I guess "go back to lurking" was a polite way of asking me to leave then. My bad.

Clearly all the listeriosis cases go to her hospital, but none of the fetal alcohol syndrome cases
