Ugh that sounds so delish right now!! Why do we crave things that aren't good for us? And no I am not heating up my turkey! Yuck! Anyone else still enjoying lunch meat?
What on earth do you think is wrong with a turkey sandwich? It sounds like a good source of lean protein, grain, and veggies (depending on what you put on it).
ETA: And I'd love a turkey sandwich too, except it appears certain other people still hate poultry. I'd heat mine up because I love warm sandwiches (especially on a cold day like today) but if thats not your thing its totally cool to eat it non-heated. The turkey has already been cooked anyways.
I refuse to eat uncooked lunch meat and unpasteurized dairy. It's not worth the risk!
"Pregnant women make up 17 percent of all cases of listeriosis. Once in the bloodstream, Listeria bacteria can travel to any site, but seem to prefer the central nervous system and the placenta. The fetus is unusually prone to infection from L. monocytogenes, which can lead to a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infection of the neonate and health problems following birth."

I agree with @joules235 I'd kill for a glass of scotch whiskey right now - cold cuts are the least of my worries I'd eat subs at subway every day if I wasn't too lazy to walk across town to hurt it lol. I say go for it! Just make sure the meat is properly stored (which it should be anyway, pregnant or not)

Of course cold cuts aren't raw but that doesn't mean they don't carry bacteria. They need to be heated to sizzling hot before you eat them in order to kill any bacteria.
A deli near me has a jalapeno roast beef sandwich - no way I was giving that up. I have had quite a few sandwiches with a variety of cold cuts and it has been fine. My midwife made a good point when she said that pregnant women are given a heightened sense of smell for a reason - it is usually fairly obvious if any meat or dairy isn't fresh or if something is wrong with it. Use common sense and enjoy your sandwich!

Also, spinach, celery and cantaloupe are three huge sources of listeria outbreaks, but I have never heard of anyone - pregnant or not - being advised not to eat those particular fruits/vegetables.

So you want me to burn my mouth? I mean, it sounds like you're saying the sandwich can't even cool down before you eat it.
I'm with @joules235. I have been craving wine for over a week. The kicker- I'm not a wine drinker! Never have been. Haven't found one I like but yet here I sit, at work thinking about wine. WTF baby?!
And I totally devoured a turkey sandwich from Jimmy Johns this weekend. No guilt whatsoever

Do whatever you want. Just repeating what every website about pregnancy nutrition recommends.
Everything could have bacteria on it. Like PP said, you risk of getting listeria from bagged lettuce/spinach is way higher. But if you don't feel comfortable eating certain things, then don't.
BTW, just because you haven't gotten sick yet doesn't mean you wont. It might be rare but it could happen.
According to FoodSafety.gov, sources of listeria are
Sources
Ready-to-eat deli meats and hot dogs
Refrigerated pâtés or meat spreads
Unpasteurized (raw) milk and dairy products
Soft cheese made with unpasteurized milk, such as queso fresco, Feta, Brie, Camembert
Refrigerated smoked seafood
Raw sprouts
No one said anything about RAW lunch meat.
Doesn't ready to eat mean the stuff that comes pre-packaged vs what is sold in the deli?
Would like to hear your opinion on the veggies as well.
And you're right, just because I haven't gotten sick yet doesn't mean it can't happen. I've yet to be hit by a car either, but I'm not ruling out the possibility. I'm just being smart about where I get my food from and refusing to live within a bubble.

I agree with this. If you don't feel comfortable eating it then don't. If you aren't worried then go for it.

Oh my god, I'd KILL for a glass of wine! Ugh, I'm afraid that if I even take a sip I will down a whole bottle. I recommend a wine called Red Cat, it's so delicious!
I would eat the sandwich if you're craving is that bad. My doc said it has nothing to do w/the actual meat, it's bacteria in the factories and grocery store deli counters that is dangerous...so obvi this can be a concern with deli cheese, too, which I eat all the time. If you're that concerned she said to get the prepackaged stuff, it's the safest (just usually not as tasty). If you're willing to take the risk, then have a sandwich. Everything in moderation. Heck, I had a turkey sub around week 6 or so and we survived! I haven't had any deli meat since other than heated up ham on a grilled cheese, but if I want a sandwich bad enough I'll have it, just not everyday. You're making me want a Quick Check sub!

I eat sushi about twice a week now (that's down from 3 or 4x/week). I've been ordering from the same handful of restaurants for the past 10 years of so. I figure if they haven't gotten me sick in the past decade, they aren't like to get me sick now.
I am avoiding sushi from places that I don't know or that haven't been around a long time.

I would love a turkey sandwich. With a bottle of champagne. I am craving champagne like a mad person. turkey sandwich for lunch... Now champagne, maybe I can get my husband to open a bottle so I can have a glass?!?!
I heat up my ham sandwiches because the only acceptable way to eat a ham and cheese sandwich is if the cheese is melted. I will devour cold turkey or bologna though!
@LoHerrim...I you for posting those stats. It drives me crazy to see women go BSC over Listeria without knowing the actual numbers. Do some offing research.
Also, I'm going to Arby's for lunch and getting a ham sammich. And no, not a warm one, a market fresh one.

CDC estimates that approximately 1600 illnesses and 260 deaths due to listeriosis occur annually in the United States

You're far more likely to get hit by a car than contract listeria.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.
I'm gonna add one other thing. Right after I got my BFP, I went to a "meet our other docs" reception at my practice.
The only food they served was platters of cold cuts and cheese -- out at room temp. for at least two hours.
Make of that what you will.
