  • I had a turkey club sandwhich yesteday.  It was okay.   I mean as long as you are not eating turkey from a gas station I wouldn't sweat it.

I refuse to eat uncooked lunch meat and unpasteurized dairy.  It's not worth the risk!

"Pregnant women make up 17 percent of all cases of listeriosis. Once in the bloodstream, Listeria bacteria can travel to any site, but seem to prefer the central nervous system and the placenta. The fetus is unusually prone to infection from L. monocytogenes, which can lead to a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infection of the neonate and health problems following birth."
Source: https://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/foodnut/09372.html and there are a million other sources... and turkey is the one cold cut with the worst risk of listeria.

  • I've been eating lunchmeat cold no problems so far.
  • That's all I craved for three months. And it wasn't just turkey, I wanted a cold cut combo from subway. And that's what I got.

  • I've had a few turkey sandwiches throughout - no guilt here.

  • dammit. Now I'll have to make another trip to subway.

  • A deli near me has a jalapeno roast beef sandwich - no way I was giving that up. I have had quite a few sandwiches with a variety of cold cuts and it has been fine. My midwife made a good point when she said that pregnant women are given a heightened sense of smell for a reason - it is usually fairly obvious if any meat or dairy isn't fresh or if something is wrong with it. Use common sense and enjoy your sandwich!

BTW, just because you haven't gotten sick yet doesn't mean you wont. It might be rare but it could happen.

According to FoodSafety.gov, sources of listeria are
    Sources
    • Ready-to-eat deli meats and hot dogs
    • Refrigerated pâtés or meat spreads
    • Unpasteurized (raw) milk and dairy products
    • Soft cheese made with unpasteurized milk, such as queso fresco, Feta, Brie, Camembert
    • Refrigerated smoked seafood
    • Raw sprouts

No one said anything about RAW lunch meat.

  • Of course cold cuts aren't raw but that doesn't mean they don't carry bacteria.  They need to be heated to sizzling hot before you eat them in order to kill any bacteria.

So you want me to burn my mouth? I mean, it sounds like you're saying the sandwich can't even cool down before you eat it.

    I'm with @joules235.
I have been craving wine for over a week. The kicker- I'm not a wine drinker! Never have been. Haven't found one I like but yet here I sit, at work thinking about wine. WTF baby?!

And I totally devoured a turkey sandwich from Jimmy Johns this weekend. No guilt whatsoever

Do whatever you want. Just repeating what every website about pregnancy nutrition recommends.

  • Everything could have bacteria on it.  Like PP said, you risk of getting listeria from bagged lettuce/spinach is way higher.  But if you don't feel comfortable eating certain things, then don't.

Doesn't ready to eat mean the stuff that comes pre-packaged vs what is sold in the deli?

Would like to hear your opinion on the veggies as well.

And you're right, just because I haven't gotten sick yet doesn't mean it can't happen. I've yet to be hit by a car either, but I'm not ruling out the possibility. I'm just being smart about where I get my food from and refusing to live within a bubble.

  • Eat a turkey sandwich. Nobody tells you not to eat spinach or cantaloupe. They can give you listeria too.

I agree with this. If you don't feel comfortable eating it then don't. If you aren't worried then go for it.

Oh my god, I'd KILL for a glass of wine! Ugh, I'm afraid that if I even take a sip I will down a whole bottle. I recommend a wine called Red Cat, it's so delicious!

And now I want Subway too, damnit!
  • mmmm sandwiches in general. I say go for it

  • I need my oysters..
  • I would eat the sandwich if you're craving is that bad.  My doc said it has nothing to do w/the actual meat, it's bacteria in the factories and grocery store deli counters that is dangerous...so obvi this can be a concern with deli cheese, too, which I eat all the time.  If you're that concerned she said to get the prepackaged stuff, it's the safest (just usually not as tasty).  If you're willing to take the risk, then have a sandwich.  Everything in moderation.  Heck, I had a turkey sub around week 6 or so and we survived!  I haven't had any deli meat since other than heated up ham on a grilled cheese, but if I want a sandwich bad enough I'll have it, just not everyday.  You're making me want a Quick Check sub!

  • I heat up my ham sandwiches because the only acceptable way to eat a ham and cheese sandwich is if the cheese is melted. I will devour cold turkey or bologna though!
  • And....now I want sushi!  And some liverwurst.  But not together, because that would be gross.
