I was addicted before I got pregnant last time, but once DH figured out it had aspartame, he asked me not drink it anymore. Instead, I started drinking the Kool Aid to go things.
I can't have anything with Nutrasweet in it without getting awful headaches (from diet colas to foods to gum). I figure it's my body's way of telling me to stay away from it so I definitely wouldn't when pg. But I also kicked my caffeine habit. I figure the less artificial stuff I put in my body the better.
But unless you're drinking gallons of Crystal Light I'm sure it's fine.
If someone yelled at me for drinking/eating something, I'd be pissed. Tell your sister to mind her own business.
I used to drink at least a pitcher of crystal light a day. I stopped drinking it when I got pregnant. However, I do still occasionally have some artificial sweeteners, I just chose to cut the crystal light to help me cut down. Unless you're drinking gallons a day, there's likely little risk to your baby.
Lots of people will tell you what to eat and what not to eat. The best advice I can give you is to have a comeback and know that unless you are smoking crack or doing meth, then you are probably fine.
Example:
I was at an inservice meeting before school started in August. At this point I was about 16 weeks pregnant. After lunch, I was talking to some of the teachers about where I went for lunch because I had to run some errands so I just stopped and got some pizza and a Mountain Dew at the Pizza Hut drive through. One of the teachers, who has never had any kids, looked at me with this disgusted look and said "What did you say? You drank a Mountain Dew?? Should you really be drinking that pregnant??" Previously I had looked up how much caffeine was ok to drink and had also asked my doctor and she said about 200-300mg is fine. I came back and said "Yes, I do think I should be drinking this. I can have around 200mg of caffeine a day but thanks for asking."
I am in the same boat as you- I know how important fluids are right now, and I hate everything...except crystal light. I looked it up and found that it should be okay to take aspartame, but not sachrin (sp?). From what I read, sachrin is broken down by the body differently, and they body turns it into alcohol (in some form) and it is not recommended by some doctors for that reason.
I agree with earlier post- as long as you are not doing crack (and others like it) you should be fine...but ask your dr- he/she will tell you the best answer.
Re: crystal light drinkers
The FDA has said that moderate aspartame use is safe for pregnant women.
