Post Partum Hypoglycemia Anyone?

I had a really bad blood sugar drop today that kind of freaked me out. We had just finished LOs newborn session (glad we got it done first!), when it hit. 35 minutes later I was feeling better, but I've never had a blood sugar issue last that long. 5 - 10 minutes is usually the worst it gets. I had the numb hands and feet, black vision, ringing ears, nausea, chest pain, hot/cold sweats, inability to support my own weight, and slurred speech.

Anyone else have a rough time of it post partum?

Re: Post Partum Hypoglycemia Anyone?

  • Not yet, but I radically altered my diet several years ago because of low blood sugar issues, so I've been extra diligent about avoiding it PP. At first I went to a nutritionist who suggested eating more frequently, which did not really help. I ended up cutting out sugar and most carbs and focusing my diet on healthy fats (avacado, coconut oil, bacon. ;), protein, and veggies. It has helped tremendously. Low blood sugar is such a challenge. I always have some nuts, beef jerky, and dried fruit around. And now when baby eats, mama eats too.

  • Good ideas about having protein around. While pregnant I was really good about always having a ziploc of almonds. I should keep doing that. I'm thinking that between the photo studio being blazing hot, me wearing more clothes than usual since we were in public, and it being a 4 hour shoot where I only ate a small sandwich the whole time (and nursed LO twice during that time), everything added up to give me problems.

Andplusalso, bacon and avocado? Yes please!!

  • I had similar issues with my first but honestly I just don't think I was eating enough to keep up with the nursing, etc. I wasn't drinking enough water either. I just try to eat small meals/snacks pretty much constantly.
