Babies: 0 - 3 Months

how much does your 1 month old eat?

My LO turns one month old today and he eats expressed breast milk. In the two weeks we have upped him from 2 oz, to 2.5 oz, to 3 oz, and now he seems unsatisfied with that! He has never really denied the bottle when he gets full do I'm about giving him more. He's still eating about every two hours except for at night when he goes 3 or 4. That seems like so much!

Re: how much does your 1 month old eat?

  • Our LO is 5 and a half weeks.  When we give him expressed breast milk or formula (which is most feedings), we give him 3 ounces.  Usually that does the trick, but if he is still showing signs of hunger we give another ounce (which happens maybe once a day or less).  The timing between feedings varies, but it averages out to 10 or 11 feedings per day.

  • My 2 month old gets expressed breast milk and will down between 4-5 oz per feeding, every 2.5-3 hours.  Our pediatrician says he has a healthy appetite :)

  • Well... looks like I'm going to have to start upping my production! I definitely don't produce that much right now. :(
I think it's time to break down and get supplements
  • My LO is almost 4 weeks and usually takes 3 oz. sometimes will need 4 and occasionally will take 2 oz. I EP and have found that when there doesn't look like there is a lot of "fat" in the milk he takes more. Not sure if that's coincidence but something I noticed.
  • My twins are 5.5 weeks and they each take 3oz every 2.5-3 hours. I tthink my bigger girl could probably take more every once in awhile. We just haven't upped it yet.

  • Cocopuff09120 - don't go straight for supplements right away. A 1 to 4 month old baby can take 4-5 oz. of BM or formula at each feeding quite easily. If you need to up your production, my lactation consultant suggedted to mimic a "cluster feed" at night by using your breast pump on each breast 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off for an hour to help boost your supply. You can also include some of the foods that help boost your supply naturally too (search "lactogenic foods"). Keep at it!!!

  • Thanks mightemo. I exclusively pump every 2-3 hours for half an hour sessions and I've tried power pumping like you suggest. It's all helped some but I'm still only making between 2.5 and 3 oz at a time. :(

  • mines the same. 2mnth and doing about 4oz every 3 hrs
