2nd Trimester

When did you stop sleeping on your stomach?

I am a stomach sleeper and when I was pregnant with my boys it was hardest for me to sleep when I couldn't sleep on my stomach anymore. I can't fall asleep unless I'm on my stomach and this is usually when insomnia sinks in. I'm not comfortable on my stomach anymore and it sucks! I bought one of those snoggle pillow to see if that would help but I'm pretty miserable. When did you stop sleeping on your stomachs? Did anything help you sleep?

Re: When did you stop sleeping on your stomach?

  • I'm also a stomach sleeper. It started to become uncomfortable for me around 17-18 weeks.

I have a Snoogle too and it took some getting used to. I've had it since around 10 weeks, I think, but it's just recently started getting really comfortable. I think I'm appreciating it more as my belly gets bigger.

Good luck, hope you are able to get comfortable and get some rest.

I'm 24 weeks and still sleeping half on my stomach. I tend to lift my knee and lean to one side. I only stopped fully stomach sleeping at about 21 weeks because I just couldn't anymore. I just use a regular pillow if its uncomfortable. Baby also likes to kick into the mattress when I'm trying to get to sleep, so I'm doing my best to switch to full side sleeping now.

  • I still (at 21 weeks) partially sleep on my stomach with the aid of a body pillow. It's like a mix between a side sleep and a full stomach sleep.

I still wake up constantly throughout the night to switch sides but it's better than nothing!

If you knew better, you'd do better.
  • 18 weeks now and I am also partially sleeping on my belly. I definitely grew quicker with this pregnancy than I did with my son so I think it will be sooner that I will have to move to side sleeping..

I am a stomach sleeper myself but trained myself to sleep on my side at the second trimester. At 20 weeks now, not exactly comfortable for me and often find myself shifting to one side to another all night. Also I am trying to avoid sleeping on my back since I read that it is not a good position to sleep. But sleeping on my back feels good when my sides ache. Ugh I can't win! The best way to sleep and works for me is placing a pillow inbetween my legs or lean my back against a stiff firm pillow. Luckily I can fall back to sleep fast during disturbed sleep.
  • I was a stomach sleeper as well. Definitely the hardest thing in pregnancy that I had to get over! I couldn't sleep comfortably on my belly past 12/13 weeks. However, I have a maternity pillow that I kick my leg over and twist as far as I feel comfortable so i'm pretty much laying on half of my belly and resting the other half over the pillow. If that makes any sense. It's the next best thing!
  • Immediately when I found out. I felt bad even though I knew it was fine for a while. My problem came when I was no longer able to sleep on my back. Ugh.
  • I'm ok with the sleeping on my stomach thing, I used to sleep partially on my stomach while lifting myself up with my knee and my upper half would be on a side pillow but i stopped sleeping like that for a while now

I alternate between sleeping on my back and sides with a pillow between my legs even before pregnant. @CVislo with sleeping no your back it's the blood supply that you dont want to cut off right? when does that happen at what week should i stop? and is it uncomfortable or dangerous?

  • same here. tummy sleeper also with fibromyalgia so it's pretty much the ONLY way i can sleep comfortably. however, i am also VERY short and popped out fast. i've been sleeping on my left side since about 12 weeks. my shoulders - even with a maternity pillow - are on fire every morning when I wake, and often i roll onto my back in my sleep so i wake up constantly to pee and with even worse back pain. I can't wait to sleep on my tummy again in the future ;_;

  • Probably stopped sleeping on my stomach at 14 weeks (pregnant with twin girls).  Now I am a side sleeper waiting for my body pillow to come in the mail.  I am currently (20w) just using a ton of pillows to prop around myself.  I still get pretty uncomfortable though.  And any sort of switching sides is really uncomfortable for me...I think the girls get upset when I wake them up to switch sides. ;)

Yes, the weight of your uterus can compress the vena cava, which restricts blood flow. It's just like sleeping on your stomach; there is no set time to stop, your body will let you know when it's not working anymore. But being on your back is ok if you're not completely flat.

  • I stopped in the last week. I just feel like I'm sleeping on a softball if I lay on my stomach now.

  • I'll be 17 wks tomorrow and I still sleep on my stomach.  Funny thing though, I stopped sleeping on my stomach a couple of years ago because it hurt my lower back too much (even with yoga and stretching).  I only slept on my sides until I got pregnant but then started sleeping on my stomach again because it was so comfortable!
  • At 19 weeks, I'm still sleeping on my stomach.  Fall asleep on my back and wake up flipped over.

I'm sorry! I've just figured out that if I get on my computer, I get notifications! lol. I'm mainly a mobile user.

Anyway, the reason I stopped sleeping on my back is because it was causing pain in my torso area to sleep on my back. Almost as if I was trying too hard to suck in my stomach. I can feel the pressure of the added weight pressing down on me and it's not comfortable at all.
  • I'm 14 weeks and still okay sleeping on my stomach, although I toss and turn a lot more than usual.  I think it might be time to order a pregnancy pillow, will have to do that this weekend!

  • When I was pregnant the first time I slept on my stomach until it became uncomfortable. I think that was somewhere around 22 weeks. But I had a sleep position discussion with my doctor several weeks later and she said there's nothing particularly dangerous about stomach sleeping even late in pregnancy; it's just awkward and uncomfortable.

  • I'm almost 23w and I'm also a stomach sleeper. A trick that worked for me was to prop up a couple pillows and than use my boppy(still have it from my first child) and make that on top on an angle. That way when I lay my belly sinks in the boppy nook. Hope this helps you ladies out! :)
  • The answer to your question will vary by person. I am also a stomach sleeper. I am 22 weeks now and I still half sleep on my stomach with one leg bended to kind of lift my belly. I alternate between that and sleeping on my side curled into my body pillow.

  • I used to only be able to sleep on my stomach but changed about two years ago when my dermatologist recommended I not sleep with my face squished into the pillow anymore. So now I'm on my side or back, but I tried sleeping on my stomach when I was about 6 or 7 weeks, just to see if it was still comfortable, and I already found it uncomfortable due to the bloat.
