Asthma question?

I have asthma and with this pregancy it has been really bad. I had to use my inhealer a lot plus I take a daily inhealer but I am getting scared that it is not good for the baby. Is anyone having a problem with asthma if you have it or some tips to make it better would help thanks.

Re: Asthma question?

  • I have asthma but it went away (?!) about a year ago. I remember my doctor telling me that if I needed to use my inhaler more than X times per day (3? I'm not certain now) that the inhaler wasn't effective for me and that we should switch medications. Maybe contact your doc for something different? Is your inhaler a rescue inhaler or a prophylactic inhaler? You may need a steroid inhaler, too.

  • I have severe asthma, my midwife and my GP both agree that the benefits of making sure that myself and baby get adequate oxygen far outweigh the risks of using my Advair (cat C) daily.

  • Thanks everyone for the help I will talk to my doc. On Friday when I go. It's been a big help.
  • My doctor told me that the inhaler is one of the only medicines that you have to think of yourself first for. If you are not getting the oxygen you need, then neither is your baby. I use a humidifier every night to help open things up. Hope this helps.

  • I agree with all pp's. Definitely better to be able to breathe than not use your medicine. I have been a terrible asthma sufferer all my life but fortunately while pregnant it seems to get better. One of my GPs once told me to eat a tablespoon of honey once a day. I really don't know if it actually helped or if it just had a mind over matter effect, but I did use my inhaler less.
  • My asthma has worsened considerably since I've been pregnant. Both my docs assured me that the meds are perfectly safe to take. But def. talk to your doc about re-evaluating your meds. They may be able to find a combo that better controls your symptoms.

The good news is, they told me once i have the baby I should be back to my normal, very mild, asthma. :)

  • My pulmonologist said 1/3 get better, a 1/3 get worse, and a 1/3 stay the same during pregnancy.  Would letting a shower run hot while you sit in the bathroom help?  Sometimes that clears my airways enough to help.  I would make an appointment with a specialist if you don't already have one.
On our way to baby#2!  Praying for a healthy and happy delivery next June!
  • I was in the same boat.   Doc prescribed Symbicort (b/c) with a spacer.   That's all I am on these days and only take one per day. I do lose my voice with it and all the others, even after rinsing, but it's better than the alternative.
  • I have asthma and have been using the rescue inhaler Xopenex almost daily. I freaked out when I read it can cause cleft palate (but apparently only in very large doses) my OB was going to start me on a daily inhaler but said it would be pretty expensive. Then she prescribed me some pills for asthma that I have not started taking. I didn't want to start a new medicine when pregnant. Not getting enough oxygen is far more harmful than the inhaler. I'm still using mine. I'm sure it's not the worst medicine out there. Good luck!
