Replacing elastic on BG 4.0/Freetimes

Hello all,

I am wondering if anyone has replaced the elastic on their bumgenius dipes? My DD is 20 months and I'm due with #2. Some of them are stretching out- I know it's from using 3 layers at night. I would like to freshen them up before #2 gets here. If anyone has, could you send me a link please of where you got directions? I saw cotton babies have refresher kits, but I only have snap dipes. Thanks so much.
Also, if anyone has a good night time routine where it's not so bulky please share! I use a BG newborn, regular insert and a hemp insert at night. TIA!!!!

To replace on 4.0s, it's super easy. You need 1/4" wide elastic, a small safety pin, needle and thread. I *think* the legs require 4.5" of elastic, but am not certain - you can figure that out once you cut out the old elastic.

Anyway, turn the pocket inside out and you'll be able to see where the elastic is attached. There is no seam ripping required. I just cut out the old elastic, sewed one end of new elastic right where the old was cut out, then threaded the new elastic through the casing (this is where the safety pin is handy) and sewed the other end of elastic at the other end.

I'm not sure if the Freetimes have the easy-replace elastic like this or not, though.

ETA: to answer your other question - ditch the microfiber. It's bulky and not very absorbent for the size. My favorite ON pocket stuffing (when we could still use pockets overnight) was a Flip night time insert and a Joeybunz hemp. Or you could stuff with 2-3 hemp and see if that works.

  • Oh thank you so much! I am going to go buy some elastic this week and fix these. I am going to buy some Joeybunz as well, thanks again!

I did this exactly with my BGs and some other pockets.  I just did a YouTube search and found some helpful videos showing exactly what PP explained.  To me, it was more helpful to see it.  Good Luck!

  • Another hint, safety pin the new elastic to the old elastic to easily pull the new elastic through the casing. It seemed to speed up the process for me. Good luck!
