5 Facts

I suppose this is more of a GTKY. I think we tried it once before and people posted facts about random stuff but I think it would be fun to post facts about ourselves. So, tell me 5 interesting, surprising or unique facts about yourself! This post is inspired by the one where you were supposed to talk about your quirks or food quirks or something. So, the more bizarre the better.

  • Hmm... what five do I pick?
    1. I grew up on a dairy farm in rural Ontario. Now, living in Toronto, I sometimes miss rural life so achingly much and I'm still holding out hope that one day I'll get to move back to the wide open spaces, despite the lack of opportunity in rural areas and small towns.
    2. I've written 2.5 novels in 3 separate Novembers of National Novel Writing Month. They all suck. I've never edited them, but I love that I've written them.
    3. I kept my last name after I got married. Other than my sister, and one woman in my church, I don't know any other woman who has done this. I'm surprised that it's a choice that's not more popular, despite its growing acceptability.
    4. I have planted a garden two years in a row, and each year, more than half of what I've grown has rotted away in the dirt. I get excited at the end of May, but just can't seem to follow through. But this year won't be like last, right? This year, my gardening endeavours will succeed!
    5. I worked in the elephant department of a local zoo for a semester while in university. I got to ride behind the ears of an elephant. The job sucked, but that elephant ride was awesome.

  • 1. I hit a flying goose with my car when I was 16.  I had my license for ~6 months, I tried to avoid it but it took off my driver side mirror.

    2. I had 2 beehives for 10 years (all prior to college).  DH and I discuss getting some here on our acreage.

    3. I attended Comic Con back in 2004 only because I was in the area (100% traveling summer internship) and a couple of friends went (I hadn't seen them the whole summer).  They made me fake tickets that we printed at Kinko's the night prior.  I was terrified I'd get thrown out.  One of the celebrity attendees tried to take me home/back to the hotel with him...it was awkward (as was the entire experience)!

    4. From 2006 to 2009 I had lived in 3 different states (Iowa, Kansas, and Georgia) but 4 different cities.  I was in one of those cities for 2.5 years.  Do the math, I moved a ton!  This was all due to work.

    5. I'm kind of famous!  I did a photo shoot back in 2007 for my company and my pictures are used widely for advertising purposes.  My picture was up for about 2 years at the Des Moines Airport in the baggage claim area, I'm on the company annual reports, other magazines, etc.  I have been sent pictures of myself on signs in Mexico too!  It's crazy!

  • Yesss I love these!

    1. I am adopted. I have never met my birth parents and won't seek them out, but would be ok with meeting my birth mother if she reached out to me.

    2. I was the #1 female shot-putter on my high school track team.

    3. I went to dinner with the editor in chief of the Esquire magazine website while in college and he tried to pick me up. It was awkward.

    4. I am afraid of birds; especially larger ones like geese, swans, cranes, ostriches, etc.

    5. I can't stand New York City and get annoyed whenever I tell people I'm from New York and they assume I am from there. NY is a HUGE state, people. I am from the good part - where there's mountains and lakes and stuff. :)

Also adopted and never met my bio parents but have AMAZING adoptive parents and also originally from NY (upstate, Albany to be exact) and get really annoyed about that too when people ask where I was born, am originally from, etc.

  • 1. I'm half Mexican (my mom) but have strawberry-blonde hair, green eyes and freckles. It's not totally abnormal to have this coloring in Mexico, but most Americans find this a hilarious party joke :)
    2. I was raised in a Buddhist household, and while I don't follow any specific religious or spiritual practice now, it still makes the most sense to me.
    3. I did my graduate degree in Womens Studies and Religious Studies - my area of focus was women's leadership in early (pre-canonization) Christianity, focusing on the gnostic or heretical documents not chosen for the New Testament.
    4. I'm wearing faux leather leggings today. That's right, sassy pregnant lady coming through!
    5. I have a pitbull named Emma that I rescued 8 years ago - and when people tell me that she'll become just a "dog" when the baby arrives, I want to slap them!

Mrs Case said: I married a younger man. DH is almost 5 years younger. People tell us all the time that 5 years is "nothing" but let me tell you, there are times in our relationship when it feels lightyears.
I have had my bellybutton pierced for nearly twenty years. This makes me feel old. DH was probably in grade school when I had it done-ha!I have been in Disney's Club 33. People make a huge deal but I thought it was pretentious and much ado about nothing.
I got to fly on a private plane a few months ago. I shoved all the snacks into my purse. Tacky and proud!Twice I have been traveling internationally and almost died. The last thought that ran through my mind both times was, 'I wonder if my parents will make some news show like Dateline or 20/20 do a show about young people traveling abroad.' Nevermind reasonable thoughts like, 'Save me Jesus!' or Who will get my dog?'

My husband is almost 3 years younger! Also, I got a tramp stamp when I was 16 - that
    definitely makes me feel old!

Edit: quoting issue.. I added some spaces

  • 1. I actually have two different colored eyebrows. One is brown and the other is blonde, so I fill them both in.
    2. Same as my eyebrows, my eyelashes are also different colors.
    3. I have natural, almost orange streaks in my hair on the "blonde" side of my head which make my hair look red.
    4. I've been in school for eight years and will have two bachelor's degrees when I'm done this May - one in nursing and the other in forensic science.
    5. I love watching trashy, reality TV much to my DH's dismay haha
  • 1. My favorite part of teaching is lesson planning.  I love coming up with different ideas and trying them out and tweaking them as needed.  I wish I had more time to be more effective at this, but the nature of my position doesn't allow for this unless I literally want to spend every minute of every day working on plans.

    2. I have read all the HP books multiple times (3-4 maybe?) I started reading them on a family trip to Hawaii, having only brought the first book with me.  By the time we left the island I had the first 4 (the only ones released at that point) and from then on I was obsessed.  I would get the new books the day they were released and would see the movies at midnight.  Never dressed in costume, but still loved every minute of it!

    3. I have always wanted to be a mommy and think it would be something I will be good at.  However, I can't help but feel like I'm not old enough for this yet.  It is a totally ridiculous thought considering I will be 30 shortly after he is born, and several mommas here are way younger or had kids way younger.

    4. I love visiting places in which they are represented from a different time in history, such as Colonial Williamsburg.  Maybe it's the actress part of me, but I just think it is so cool.  I would love to be able to time travel to different eras.

    5. I am left handed and totally embrace this part of me.  I get super offended when people make comments such as "wow you have really nice hand writing for a lefty" wth does that even mean? I really hope my son is born a lefty...my husband is a righty, but his father and his maternal grandfather are lefties, so the genes are there!

  • 1. I have an over abundance of educational and career goals. I have a masters in education specializing in early childhood special education but I would also like to get a masters in applied behavioral analysis and become a bcba, i want to get a degree or certificate in sign language interpreting, I also would like my MSW, I want to be a children's party planner, and I want to be a newborn photographer.
    2. Before I had any children I wanted 2. Then I had my son and wanted 5. This pregnancy is number 2 so it will be interesting to see if things change
    3. Even with all my career and educational aspirations, I don't plan on working until all my children are in school (as long as this continues to be financially responsible for my family)
    4. I used to be an incredibly picky eater, my dh has slowly gotten me to eat a lot of foods I never would eat before, one of which is pulled pork sandwiches, which I now think are one of the greatest things ever.
    5. (This was a lot harder than I thought it would be!) I am closer to my best friend than any of my 3 sisters.
  • 1) I'm jealous of people who just pick their lives up and move to another country (like in House Hunters International). I want to do that more than anything but I'll never get DH on board. DH is all "I'm American, I want to live in America."

    2) I spent a semester abroad in England and it was the best 8 months of my life. I miss it so much and I can't believe it's been 7 years since I had to go home.

    3) Part of what attracted me to DH in the first place was that I knew he was in the Army and I knew that meant if we ever got married we'd be moving around a lot. (I must be having some major wanderlust since these first 3 have all been about traveling/moving)

    4) I have my BA in Anthropology and Middle Eastern studies. I have not used my degree(s).

    5) I've been on the Green Bay Packer's season ticket list since I was born. I'm still 28,000 something away from getting season tickets.

  • 1) My parents are my best friends- they are funny, caring, and are the best people I know. I hope I'm half the parents they are. DH absolutely adores them which makes me adore him even more.

    2) I was chunky growing up so most boys were never interested in me. I didn't like those that were and everyone always told me I was being too picky. I told them I would someday find one amazing man and that would be it for me. At 20 I met DH and he was "it." I'm so happy I was "picky."

    3) I dvr Gilmore Girls and Friends even though I've already seen every episode of both!

    4) I originally wanted to be a lawyer but had a serious change of heart my senior year in college and decided I wanted to be a teacher. I finished my BA and went on to get my masters in education and have never regretted it a day in my life. Teaching makes me smile!

    5) I am hardcore falling in love with maternity clothes- I can't see wanting to go back to regular post baby!

Also- I love this thread :)
  • 1) I am also adopted. My sister is African and my brother is African American. We got some fun looks running around as wee ones.
    2) I have moved 10 times since 2007. Most of them were due to a nasty divorce/domestic violence issues. I never ever want to move again.
    3. At least once a year I type in my head cold symptoms to web md and get myself worked up about a deadly or illness (tuberculosis, cancer, probably leprosy at some point).
    4) I like learning languages but can't remember them. I spoke French and Spanish almost fluently in high school and college (and even visited different countries to practice) and now I can only really understand them.
    5) I used to teach sailing lessons, and once almost died from getting smacked in the head and concussed. I haven't sailed since then, it freaks me out too much.
  • @wareagle1220 one of my pupils is bigger as well! I noticed it a few years ago and freaked out that something was wrong. I ask my eye doctor about it every year because I'm convinced there's something going on.
  • 1.  I love to travel but have barely been any where. We are currently saving for a trip to Ireland.
    2. Until I was 12 I thought I was going to be an Olympic figure skater. We moved a lot and my parents never got me in lessons. I have never stepped on an ice rink. If this baby is a girl I will be living vicariously through her. :)
    3. H is my brother's best friend and I really disliked him for the longest time. Then one day I was like "This guy is alright!"
    4. My favorite scents are salt water and perm. They take me right back to my childhood and all the happy memories.
    5. I am incredibly independent but hate being alone.

  • 1. My first day of college, I stumbled upon a ballroom dance group... fell in love with it and now teach lessons myself and have competed a few times.

    2. I earned my Masters Degree in one year, while teaching full time

    3. I hate winter, and in Nebraska... there most definitely is a winter.  DH and I have talked about moving somewhere warm all year long once we settle into life with a baby.

    4. I have a freakish talent for knowing music.  I can sing, but not super well.  I can play instruments, but not beautifully... However, I can learn lyrics to a song after the first time of hearing it, and I have a great memory and SMOKE people in a game of Name That Tune.  Usually, I just have to hear the first few notes of a song and I know what song it is.  Kind of a worthless talent though!

    5. I 150% want to cage dive with Great White Sharks someday... This is the top thing on my bucket list!

  • 1.  I dated my DH in secret for a year.  Only my parents knew about it.  He was my little brother's football coach and it would've created some controversy in our small town if people knew he was dating the sister of one of his players.

    2.  I spent many years of my life as a serious musician.  I was offered a full scholarship to a music institute but turned it down.....mostly to spite my parents who were a bit pushy on the subject.  Now, I slightly regret it.  My stand partner from high school went on to study at Julliard and become quite successful.  Meanwhile.....I sit here in my office just wondering "what if" I wasn't so stubborn.

    3.  I can say the 50 states in alphabetical order in about 30 seconds.  This skill seems to impress my elementary students every year.

    4.  I am from the great state of WI.  Everyone assumes we eat cheese and drink milk all day.  I hate the taste of milk and you couldn't pay me $1,000 to eat a plate of nachos with melted cheese.  Ewwww.

    5.  I am a lotion addict.  Dry skin gives me the heebee jeebees.  I must put lotion on my feet before I put socks on for fear of hearing that crackling sound of dry skin rubbing on cotton.  I put lotion on my hands after every single time I wash my hands.

@Rosebud2587 I am also on the season ticket waiting list for the Packers.  I hope that someday my great grandkids will actually SEE those tickets.  lol

  • 1 - my second and third toe on my right foot are conjoined/stuck together. Sadly I cannot wear toe socks or those running shoes with toes.

2 - I have run 2 marathons and a handful of halfs. A herniated disk and then becoming a mom has derailed me the last few years but I desperately want to get back into running long distances.

3 - I have never had a cavity and my dentist told me I have the most perfect teeth he has seen except for his roommate in college who had perfect teeth without having braces.

4 - I also would give anything to pick up and move out of the country even for a year or two. I now have a job at a world wide company where this would be possible and H has a job that he can do almost anywhere although for very low pay (rowing coach). Meanwhile my sister and BIL will be moving to Ethiopia for 2 years with their kids as missionaries and I am a little jealous I don't have the guys to do that.

5 - I won't let 'fat' be said in my house. If I am reading a book to DD with that word I will replace it with 'big' or something similar. I've had weight issues my whole life and got made fun of including name calling as a small child and hate that word more than anything.

  • 1. DH and I have been together for 10 years in May; started dating him at the end of my senior year of HS.

    2. I have a birthmark on my stomach that looks like an upside-down shark fin.

    3. I have to keep my toes painted year-round.

    4. I am a true Scorpio.

    5. When I was a kid, I dreamed of being a pediatric cardiologist.

  • 1. I am the product of IVF. My mom had an ectopic pregnancy with twins, and one of her fallopian tubes shattered so they had to use good ol' science to get me. My dad calls me the most expensive bet he's ever placed. I just tell him I've been expensive from day one!

    2. I'm an only child and I love it. I would be ok with only having one child, but DH doesn't want to deal with the "only child" syndrome...whatever, I turned out just fine.

    3. The first time DH asked me out, I totally rejected him. He spent the next 6 months being kind of a jerk, so naturally, I went for him. His plan worked, but he is one of the sweetest, most caring men I have ever known.

    4. There are only a handful of people in life that I care about more than my dog. I love, love, love that little puppy. She was a surprise present for my 21st birthday (not super responsible) but we have been so attached since day one.

    5. I have known how to ski almost as long as I have known how to walk. My mom was a collegiate ski racer, and skied until she was 8 months pregnant with me (not typically advised, but she was pretty much a bad ass), and the first time she took me skiing, I was almost two and she kept me on one of the ski harnesses. Sadly, I was way better skier at age 10 than I am now, because we went skiing every single weekend while I was growing up. Now, I go 5 times a year at best. Can't wait to teach our kids to ski!

  • I LOVE this. You gals are so interesting!

    1) DH and I have a master list of bands/concerts we want to see, including people we would fly anywhere in the world for (me: David Bowie, him: Pink Floyd). We’ve amassed a fairly awesome set of experiences at this point.

    2) I’m a die hard Texas Rangers (baseball) fan. Like season tickets, follow trade rumors on twitter, and go to Spring Training kind of crazy.

    3) We tried for ~three years for this little one and put our plans on hold when I got into business school. DH loves to tell the story of when I walked into our kitchen during my break and said “This thing says I’m pregnant?”

    4) I love to travel! My favorite experiences include walking through the Churchill War Rooms in London with my Grandpa (who was in WWII) and swimming with Whale Sharks!

    image

    5) I’m an introvert in an extrovert’s body. People rate me as incredibly outgoing, but in reality, I show up late to business functions to avoid small talk with strangers and I like to think by myself.

  • 1) I've lost count of how many jobs I've had.  I had to submit a 10 year work history once and it was 5 pages long.  Most notable jobs include: EMT, Makeup Artist, Flight Attendant, Paralegal.

    2) I have an irrational fear that I won't find my baby as cute as I did my dogs when they were puppies.

    3) I was bullied...a lot... in school.  I think it helped me to develop my sarcastic sense of humor.  Also, it probably had a lot to do with my unresolved anger issues.

    4) I cannot eat just one fruit rollup.  I eat one, and then I eat all the fruit rollups within walking distance.  To the point of getting sick.

    5) I was obsessed with the movie "Newsies" as a kid (::cough:: preteen ::cough::) and had an enormous crush on "Spot".  I'm disappointed his acting career never went anywhere.

  • I love this thread - so interesting to read everyone's facts!

    1. I am married to a Jeopardy! champion (and it kills me that I got an audition first, but he got called for the show)

    2. I grew up at a swimming pool - started on the swim team when I was 4, and worked teaching swim lessons from the age of 11 through college (also was a lifeguard, office clerk, and a Water Safety Instructor) - I once placed second in a CPR competition at the local lifeguard olympics.

    3. After college, I moved to NC to do Teach for America - one of the hardest experiences - but most rewarding - I have ever had.

    4. I earned two masters degrees in two years.  While working full time.  And got married during the second year (planned and paid for it ourselves).

    5. I've known DH for 17 years (this fall) - it makes me feel really old when I realize that some of the ladies here are only a few years older than that!

    6. (Because I'm feeling special and just remembered this one) I have been to Israel 8 times and lived there for half a year.  But I haven't been since 2009 and I'm getting the itch to get back.

@SarahS11, your #4, can you come to Des Moines on Tuesday nights and help out our trivia team?  We are very hit or miss on the Name that Tune round.  I can sing all the words of songs but cannot come up with the names most times.  Your talent is very much needed!

  • 1. I grew up in rural Appalachia as the daughter of a gunsmith. My first pet was a cow. We didn't have cable. My town had no mall, movie theater, or alcohol sales.

    2. I was a first-generation college grad. I did my degree in there years, started grad school at 21. Was finished and teaching at a university by 23.

    3. Due to #1, I feel like a weirdo when childhood nostalgia of pop culture comes up in my current life. I didn't see the movies or TV shows; I didn't have the toys. And I never learned to ride a bike.

    4. I've had lots of unique experiences, including finding a corpse as a teenager.

    5. I can't figure out how to peel citrus. At all. I've taught myself many skill sets in life, but I can't do that one.

  • @Eltrain5 I want a fruit roll-up now!
  • 1. I met my husband on a blind date.  I had every intention of never seeing him again.

    2. My mom got pregnant 5 times on accident, and I always thought she was so naive... Until I got pregnant. On accident. I get it now. The pill fails. Sex is fun...

    3. I am a middle child.  I get really annoyed with the stereotypical "baby of the family" and "only child".

4.I cannot do anything artsy or crafty.  I do not have a creative side, I can implement anything, but don't ask me to create.

    5. I love watching the snarky posts.  Its one of my favorite parts about being pregnant.  I actually miss Kels, and I seriously wonder of 90% of the women getting butthurt are real...
  • 1- My dad used to do business with the mafia

2- When I was 13 I was selected, along with 30 other kids out of my state, to go sing in England. I've also recorded on 3 CDs since then.

3- I love my dog so much that I genuinely worry if I'll be able to love our baby the same. And I cry thinking about my dog feeling left out

4-I was engaged at 17 but thankfully called the wedding off a month before it was supposed to happen

5- I'm a natural light blonde but I've been dying my hair (and eyebrows) dark for 11 years. Every time I try to go back to my natural color I hate it and dye it back 6 wks later

    4.  I've had my belly button pierced since I was "of age" to get it in my state with parental consent.

    5.  I am going for my Masters degree and will graduate with that in May 2015.  However, after this baby gets here, I'll only have 2 classes left.

  • 1. I have bright blue eyes with a brown birthmark in one that gets bigger in the summer.

    2. My jaw locks so badly that I've had it get stuck open at the dentist before. I needed the doctor and nurses to help snap it shut. Not at all terrifying.

    3. I am 29 and have never had a cavity. I am beyond obsessive about dental hygiene.

    4. I didn't have internet or cable until I went to college which is why I spent most of my freshman year watching Pimp My Ride.

    5. My BF and I talked in gibberish all through high school and still do today, mostly to annoy our husbands.

    1. I have two undergrad degrees-first was a BFA in studio art, followed by a BS in biochemistry. I actually gave up a promising career in the art world (which is kind of oxymoronic usually) to go back for the biochem degree: my work sold internationally, I had been interviewed by the huffington post, I was getting commissions left and right; but I missed science. Also, I felt like I was turning a passion into a job I HAD to do and it wasn't fulfilling. So now I've been accepted to dental school and am excited about that journey.

    2. Mentioned this in the celebrity thread but the shortened version is I did some modeling when I lived in London and my photo ended up on David Bowie's fridge.

    3. I had to have an emergency appendectomy while briefly living in Italy. I could communicate somewhat effectively but it was scary to go through that in a foreign country. Also, pretty sure my "surgeon" was like a third year med student. He had to google something in front of me!!!

    4. During my time working in a research lab, I helped synthesize a new molecule that other labs had been trying to make for years. It's nothing special yet but might have some promising applications for cancer treatment.

    5. My husband and I loooove to renovate houses. We completely re-did our first house ourselves and made a killing when we sold it...now we're on number two and we're addicted.

  • 1. I grew up in Chicago and Midway airport was practically in my back yard. You get used to telling people on the phone to hold on bc a plane was flying over the house.
    2. I played the flute in school and I still pull it out and play oh Danny boy from time to time.
    3. I can sing the entire Ice Cube today was a good day. I can do it wout the music. It does take a few drinks for me to start rapping.
    4. I was widowed at 26 years old while I was 12 weeks pregnant with my son. I know have a whole set of in-laws wout the husband. I re-married 4 years later.
    5. I am my friends go to gal for advice. They make jokes that I hold the group together. This is only bc I'm the one that's available to talk during the day. Lol so who knows if my advice is good :)

  • @kellyjayne5.
THIS IS AWESOME and I miss skiing so much right now but can not wait to take my daughter as soon as she's old enough!

@mfilosi5) perogies are my ABSOLUTE favorite food I would eat them all day every day!!   I MUST have these for dinner now

    And my 5 fun facts:
    1. I am a pescetarian (vegetarian who eats fish) and have been since the 5th grade (I am now 35)  I do not miss meat one bit and the only reason I did it was a taste preference - If anyone wants an AWESOME spicy veggie chili recipe that I have perfected over years and years click here (

    2. I have known I wanted to be involved with music as a career in some way, shape or form since I was in kindergarten - I play the viola, sing and can read music. I went to college for "Music Business" and was offered a job to start literally the day after I graduated.  13+ years later it's still my favorite thing and I love my job.

    3.  I have a close group of 15+ girlfriends from H.S. that I have never lost touch with. Everyone always told us we'd all grow up and on and it gives me so much satisfaction to know they were all wrong.. even with husbands, kids, moving to different states I love these girls more than my own family - they are a part of me.

    4. I don't have a middle name and can not wait to give my daughter one b/c I always felt like I was the only one I knew without one.

    5. I knew that I wanted to marry my DH on our first date.  I have never felt that way about anyone before - nor did I ever want to have children before I met him but somehow the fact that he's got 4 from his last marriage didn't scare me one bit AND we planned to have this child together and it's the best decision I think I've ever made.

  • 1) My husband and I went to grade school together, and were each others first everything. Not including our time broken up, we have been with each other for 14 years. We heard more "I told you so" and "its about time" then we did "congratulations" for our engagement. I heard through the grapevine that the mean girls from elementary school were STILL gossiping about us at a bar when we got engaged (this is 13 years after I have spoken to any one of them). The bartender (my friend) gave them watery drinks all night.

    2) I live in a city and have very little outdoor space. Because of this I turned my front lawn into a garden, which my neighbors hate. I have read every gardening book ever recommended to me, as well as homesteading books. My ultimate dream is to move away from the city, and have enough space for an (almost) sustainable garden. My husband used to think I was crazy/not serious. Now he is fully on board.

    3) I am a planner, sometimes to a flaw. I told my husband I wanted to get pregnant the time we did, before we got engaged. I gave him a choice when the time came: I wanted a puppy or a baby. This is well known with our friends, and the guys still give him a hard time that he didn't choose puppy. My husband didn't even have a full time job at the time, he was a consultant. I wrote his resume, practiced for his interview, talked him up to the interviewers (its at my company) and got him a temporary job. I then campaigned to get him full time. This was all because my plan was to get him his own insurance before I went on maternity leave. Last night he called me an evil manipulator when he realised what I had done (in a laughing way).

    4) Even though we're almost 30, we are one of only two married couples in our group of friends, and the only ones expanding the family. It gets lonely sometimes, because my girlfriends, while in committed relationships, all seem to be living such different lives than me. Selfishly, I wish one of them would get engaged and married within a year, then pregnant on the honeymoon.

    5) When people first meet me, they tend to be intimidated and think I am a snob. I have heard this my whole life. It is because I am super shy.I am actually really nice, and pride myself on not gossiping (much) and going out of my way to be nice to EVERYONE (I think this is because I was bullied in 7th and 8th grade). I get the comments like "my first impression of you was completely wrong" all the time. I don't know how to change this, but thankfully I have amazing friends who know me well, and try to make me feel comfortable in new settings right away, to help me come out of my shell.
