Little babies

Anyone else with really small little ones.  We had DS's 2 month appt and he came in at 4% for weight and 5% for height.  Doc is having us come in biweekly for weight checks just to make sure he is gaining properly.  He isn't overly concerned about it though which makes me feel better.  Doesn't help that he was refusing bottles at daycare and STTN.  I did ask the doc if I should wakeup and feed him at night and he said for now not to worry about it.  Hopefully he keeps gaining and following his own curve!

Re: Little babies

  • L has been gaining at the very lowest rate "acceptable". She went from 20% weight when born to 6% on Tuesday. We've been going in weekly for weight checks. They keep telling me if she doesn't gain enough, then I'll have to supplement with formula, but she always manages to just hit the minimum mark. It took us 4 weeks to get back to her birth weight.

She feeds ALL.THE.TIME. so I really don't know what else we can do. I'm glad we're still EBF, but I get nervous every week at her weigh in!

  • she's been checked for lip and tongue ties, but have not done a weighted feeding.  I keep thinking we have some issue (because of what you mentioned), but everyone (ped, LC...) keeps telling me everything is "normal", so who knows.  I really hope I can start pumping soon (had to order different size flanges, then lost a piece, and had to reorder that) so I can at least get any idea of how my production is (yes, I know pumping doesn't correlate to BFing, but I figure it's gotta give me an idea).
  • I am in the same boat with weekly check ins due to her losing to much. She is current not back up to her birth weight but growing in length and head size. We have started to supplement do to dehydration and low weight. It is tough but she has recent started to gain.
  • THIS!!' So glad to hear from others in the same boat! My other 3 kids were about 12lbs at 8 weeks but of course number 4 (and final) is throwing a curve ball! Took her 5 weeks to get back to birth weight. She was 8lb 10oz at birth and now at 7weeks she's only 9lb 1oz! EBF, we did pump and bottle feed Breastmilk for a week and she still only gained minimum that week so who knows. She is sleeping 930p-5a so that probably isn't helping, but ped isn't concerned and said she must be eating if she's sleeping at night. We are currently in 18%.
  • Do I have a little baby? Hehe.

I hope you don't end up having to wake up your little one for feedings. It's brutal, especially during the rare times they sleep without being held, or for longer than 45 minutes at a time!

No advice, but just wanted to offer some encouragement, and let you know I'll be thinking of/praying for your little guy to pack on the pounds!
  • Thanks @vikingmom806!  I know he is growing on his own curve and is proportionate to his height so I know I shouldn't worry.  But of course I'm obessing.  I was on kellymom yesterday and read that a bf baby should gain between 5-7 oz a week.  I added all of his info to the calculator and hes at 6.2 oz a week so I'm trying not to stress.  He is just a little guy.  ODS wasn't ever huge by any means, only about a lb bigger at this age but then again ODS was born 5 weeks early.

look for baby staying on their own growth curve, or mirroring a parent's growth curve.
That's a really good point.  If the baby's in the same percentage at each appointment, he or she's probably just that way.  (Ours is in the 15th for weight and 20th for length, so not as small as you're talking about here... but while she's small she has lots of fat rolls, so that's just how she is.)
