fb posts, am I wrong thinking this is wrong?

I have a friend that was posting that she started feeding her 4 month old daughter solids and that her pediatrician told her it would stop her daughter from spitting up. I always thought you needed to wait cause it can cause problems. Then one of her friends mentioned how she gives her son cereal with juice because he's been having juice since he was 2 1/2 months old. What? I'm not claiming to be a dr or an expert so am I wrong thinking this is wrong? Is it fine giving solids at 4 months and juice at 2 1/2 months?

  • There are many different views when it comes to introducing solids.  We did start DS on puree at 4 months once daily.  My sister started her DD on cereal earlier due to severe reflux (and this was the recommendation of her pedi).  I still do not given DS juice, as it is just unneeded sugar.  Personally, I don't think juice at 2.5 months is normal as it is not going to give a baby any nutrients.

Many people have many different opinions.  I generally stay out of the debate, as they are mostly just opinions and differences in parenting methods.

  • Our dr ok'd solids at 4 months if we wanted to. Specifically cereal.  We were ok'd juice at 9 months but she still hasn't had any.

  • Our pedi okayed solids at 4 months too but we still waited. I know that in some cases it can help reflux. Juice at 2.5 months seems crazy to me.

  • Ok thanks ladies. I haven't really said anything cause she said her pediatrician told her to start the solids. But she gave her solids last night and this morning was complaining that she woke up and her daughter puked everywhere. My first thought was that it was too early for the solids. But guess I was wrong about the 4 months thing, my pediatrician said rice cereal 4 months then solids at 6 months but I guess it differs. But glad to know I'm not crazy with the juice thing. DD wasn't oked juice till she was 8 months and even now she only gets it once in a while like a small bit maybe once every month or two. and usually it's 100% orange juice. Thanks for your thoughts.

  • The solids at 4 months wouldn't bother me.

Juice at 2.5 months would give me pause.

I wouldn't have said anything though.

  • Solids at 4 months isn't that big of a deal.  Even though the recommended age now is 6 months, most people I know start before then.  DD was having weight gain issues and refused bottles so with the assistance of several dr's and a feeding specialist, we introduced homemade fruit and vegetable purees at 4 months.  I planned to wait but it wasn't the best option for my daughter.

I would side eye juice at 2.5 months but it wouldn't be my place to say anything.  We still haven't given DD juice and have no plans to introduce it any time soon.

  • My regular pedi was on maternity leave at our 4 month appt and the substitute pedi we saw recommended that we start using rice cereal for DDs reflux instead of her prescribed Zantac.

I knew that was poor advice, so did not and just mentioned what we were told to our normal pedi at 6 months.  Her eyes widened and she seemed relieved when I told her that we were not comfortable doing that.  She did say that fortified cereal is very beneficial AFTER 6 months for the extra iron, but only if we wanted to give it.

Seriously though, studies show that infant reflux is caused by an immature digestive system, and the last thing you want to do is introduce solids early.
This is what I thought as well and now she is posting that her daughter is sick....umm...ya think?

  • DS gets juice for tummy troubles as recommended by his pedi, one sippy a day, and one sippy of water, in the beginning (around 6 months, it was an ounce in a bottle twice a day. We didn't start him with juice OR solids til 6 months though. 2.5 months.. yikes..

  • I think all babies are different and it's hard for us to remember that sometimes. I personally though would also think juice at 2 1/2 months is too early. But I also wouldn't say anything. Especially if I know the friend enough to know that she does truly take her child to wellness appointments.

  • Many people start solids at 4 months (I personally start at 6, but it's not abnormal to start at 4). And she could have been giving juice due to severe constipation. Again, not something I have done or I believe in, but to each his own. If giving juice is the worst she's doing, baby will be ok. There are way worse things out there. And I would definitely never say anything. Well...to my husband or in my head, oh yea. But never to the mom lol

  • I think 4 months is too early for food, and so did my doctor. As for juice......my doctor as told me to avoid it as long as possible as it has no value. Water and milk (breast, cow, alternative) are all he needs.

  • My son started eating baby food at 4 months in my opinion every kid develops differently even when it comes to food! So there shouldn't just be a set time for every kid. He was ready for more then just a bottle and hated cereal. Which I was told cereal was okay by my doctor. cereal is the same consistency as baby food. So we switched and we never had a problem. I think it depends on the kid. The doctors going off text book not where your baby's at development wise.
