Holy weight gain! Breastfeeding too much?

My little chunker gained a whole pound between her one week and two week checkups. Her birth weight was 8lbs 13 oz, 1 week was 8lbs 8 oz, and this week was 9lbs 8oz! I am EBFing on demand. Can she be getting too much- I thought it wasn't possible on bm, but my doctor said to try to extend her times between feedings but still feed her when she wants it. @AmyG* - any insight?

  • Sounds fine to me. Keep doing what you are doing :)

  • My son was 7.4 at birth and 8.13 at his two week check up.  He is EBF and his dr was thrilled with his weight gain.

  • You're doing good! My LO has gained two pounds. Within a few days she lost a pound after birth due to jaundice, then she quickly gained that back and then a whole pound on top of that! She's only 2 weeks

  • Are you engorged? Your LO could be gaining "a lot" because of that. As your supply regulates, you may find that the weight gain will slow down a bit. It is also possible that your baby is just a fast grower or that you went through a growth spurt. Either way, it sounds like what you're doing is fine. If baby is happy, you probably don't need to worry :)

At my LO's one month check up he had almost doubled his birth weight from 6lbs 12oz to 11lbs 3oz, EBF. Dr wasn't worried at all and agreed you can't over feed with BM :)

  • Hoping we have similar results tomorrow! We're on a feeding plan because of no weight gain.
  • LO gained 2 1/2 lb in 3 weeks. Pedi was thrilled and said it was incredible. Said you cannot over feed a BF baby and to keep it up.

  • So glad to see this thread and know my LO isn't the only fast gainer! She was born at 6 lbs 6 oz and was up to 9 lbs 6 oz at 4 weeks!! I was shocked and worried she was eating too much but the ped was happy and said she was doing great and to keep EBFing on demand! Chunky babies are cuter anyways ;-p
  • Breastfed babies have a different growth pattern formula fed babies usually. They tend to gain weight very quickly the first six months and then slow down. I believe kellymom.com has a growth chart for bf babies. I wouldn't worry and I wouldn't try to stretch out time between feedings, continue to feed on demand at this point, you are still establishing supply at this point.
