1st Trimester

Unisom/B6-taking care of older kids

Anyone taking this for nausea and vomiting? Please tell me it works! Zofrsn gives be bad side effects. I am 7 weeks and have all day nausea and gets really bad from 4-8pm. Last pregnancy I was like this until 20 weeks but it is harder now because I am mostly a SAHM. My almost 3 year old is watching way more tv than I like because I am useless. I feel like a terrible mom. How do you manage?

baby #3 arrived in September 2014...cannot get ticker to work no matter what I try!

  • I am still taking it into my 3rd tri. It was a lifesaver for me in 1st tri. I take half a unisom and 50mg of B6.

  • Sorry for the above weird post, can't figure out what happened. I was trying to say...I took it at bedtime for the duration of both pregnancies. It made the daytime manageable. I had horrible all day sickness my both entire pregnancies.

  • I took until I delivered my second! It was the only way I could get through the days, and it really did help me. I skipped it one day at 36 weeks and was sick, so I definitely believe it works. I took it every night since it really does make you sleepy, and it would last through the next day. I hope it works for you!
  • i have been taking it at night since i was 5-6 weeks along.  I have a 5 year old and if she gets up in the middle of the night i can still take care of her but then i can fall asleep that much faster!!  I forgot to take it a couple weeks ago and felt horrible for a whole day.  i will be taking it till this baby comes!!!

  • I've been taking the B6 morning, noon and evening then I take the unisom right before bed.  Otherwise I'd be knocked out all day and my 5 year old would run wild.  But both seem to be helping a ton.  Have you tried ginger yet? I bought a bunch of Gin Gin candies and they have been saving my life as well.

  • I'm taking the prescription version of these two together called Diclegis and it's fantastic.  I had horrible nausea the first trimester and I'm now finally eating and sleeping.  The med is ridiculously expensive ($562 for 100 ct without insurance) but my doc was VERY good about giving me the coupon from the company where you pay $30 maximum.  Apparently, two recent studies found miscarriage and birth defect risks with the use of Zofran (my OB has a background in biochemistry and tends to stay very much on top of the legitimate scientific studies, and since I have a similar background, will discuss them with me) and so she wanted to use the Diclegis instead.  It's a class A drug formulated specifically for pregnancy.

  • I'm also on diclegis, and it makes me feel drowsy all day too. I have the same problem-DD1 is 3 and DD2 is 15 months. I'm laying on the couch groggy all day until 5 o'clock, then I'm back on the couch at 6 from fatigue. It's awful and I haven't figured out a solution. I tried taking 1 pill instead of 2, but the nausea came back full swing. No help, but I can relate. We'll get through this!

How are they scheduling your doses?  I'm taking 2 at night before bed and waking up completely alright.  I know if you have to add the third pill in the morning, it would keep you sleepy, but it seems odd that a nighttime dose would linger so long!

  • Just two pills before bed. All meds seem to hit me harder than most people though, but like I said when I tried one it did nothing for the nausea. So for now, I'm stuck with grogginess if I don't want to be sick all day.
  • Me too, I take 2 at bed and am out of it all day
  • I was taking it at the beginning and I found that after I took the unisom (in the morning because it didn't do anything to help with my nausea during the day) it made me insanely tired for about 20-30 min and then I was fine. I guess it's completely dependent on how each individual reacts to it.
I also tried phenergen at one point and it made me so much more groggy than unisom, plus it made me feel even more sick!
