Do you like the name Bali?

Do you like the name Bali (Bah-lee)? I think it sounds pretty and it has meaning to my husband and me. I realize it is uncommon and actually more common as a Hindi boy name, but I want to use it for a girl. I like the idea of it not being a common name. Please tell me "yes," "no" or "it's growing on me." as a response. I posted this question on another site and some people were a little rude. I have already pondered many reasons why the name may or may not be a good idea, which is why I'm still only considering it rather than having already decided on it. I also feel that so many names can be linked to a word that would evoke teasing. So what I really need is just to get an idea of how many people like the sound of the name. I would prefer not to see a list of negativity in case I do decide to use it. I like the way the name makes me feel and it's perfect for our last name, but I would also like if the name were well received by people.

You have a habit of double posting questions on seemingly random boards (asking about prenatal vitamins on Dec12 in 2013?) and I'm just trying to figure out your motivation. If it's to ask often enough so that you get the answer you're looking for, fine. I kind of got that feeling from your OP. But if it's to actually get advice you may want to check out the community boards and find one that fits your needs. Like the Baby Name board, for instance? If this is your MO, I can see why people may have been less than helpful to you in the past. You'll have better luck posting on a topic-specific board than spamming The Bump with repeat polls and questions.

I wasn't familiar with how it works at first.  I was reading a discussion in July 2014 and just hit "add new discussion." I didn't realize there was a poll option. So then I used that one.  After I became more familiar with things, I used my month that I'm due, April, and the area where I live, San Diego. Geeze!!!

Like I said, not trying to be a jerk. I figured you were new here, so I wanted to help because I thought you'd want to successfully get your question answered, and a lot of people check out the post history of people aren't familiar with and don't respond if it looks like spam. So you're due in April14? That's great! Why not introduce yourself and let us get to know you? People are also more apt to offer opinions/advice to people who have at least said hi to their birth month.

I was thinking this as well. I understand that the name might have some significance to you so maybe honor that by using it as a middle name. This way you don't run the risk of ridicule to the child, mispronunciations and the like but you still get to pay homage to whatever it is that means something to you and DH.

But if you're dead set on it and it gives you & your DH warm fuzzies, then our opinions (or anyone's opinions for that matter) shouldn't mean jack shit and you should just name your daughter whatever you want. Chances are you've already settled on the name anyway...why put yourself under the unnecessary stress of having to read a kajillion negative comments about it, only to repost on another board asking for no negativity?? Seems fishy.

Just going to throw it out there since you are new to this....Having your email address as a screen name isn't the best idea either. That is unless you like getting tons of spam emails.

I'm not a fan but I don't have to be. As long as you and your DH love it that's all that matters. We are most likely going with Hayden for our little girl which most people on here don't like. It's ok with me. It's really grown on me over the past 2 months and I love it now! Plus it's the only name we agree on. I'm sure your Bali is something that would grow in your family and friends.

FWIW, I actually voted that it's growing on me. I don't hate the name, but it has a lot of associations with other things (lingerie, geographical, cultural) that make it a tough choice.

Serious question: are a bunch of Internet strangers going to sway your decision??

I'm not a fan.  For one thing, I still can't figure out how you're suggesting it be pronounced, I say Ball-E when I read it, and that's after I saw the post title and assumed you were trying to find a cutesy way to spell Bailey.

I used to sell window treatments and Bali is a brand of window blinds/shades so that's all I think of when I hear it.

Thanks to everyone for taking the poll. I realized after looking at other data that it's common for most names to have a large percentage of dislikes. I really didn't learn anything for the comments on why not to use the name bc I already knew all of those reasons. They weren't really that impressive to me either. I was mostly interested in how many people would like the name. Sorry. I tried to help you not waste you not waste your time with telling me! I really love the name and I think I like it paired with Anne as a middle name. I'm a little excited about the people who voted "it's growing on me." It's like planting a pretty little name seed and watching it sprout.

So 149+ people tell you they hate the name, and 16 people say it is growing on them and all you take from that is " I'm a little excited about the people who voted "it's growing on me." It's like planting a pretty little name seed and watching it sprout".

This is a joke right? I can justify calling her that if has significant meaning but like @AcaAwkward said if you are trying to be "original" then...no...just no. I work at a bank and you wouldn't believe how many "original" names I come across everyday, and how many people end up changing them once they are old enough.

Now you can go ahead and be mad at me too but hey, this is a public forum and you asked the question, "Do you like the name Bali?"
