Iron supplementation

Today at DD's 4 month appt, her pediatrician said I need to start giving her an iron supplement since she's EBF. I've been reading a lot on here since she was born but for some reason never read about this. For vitamin D supplement, I found the Ddrops that's only 1 drop instead of that disgusting dropped full of sugar crap. Is there a similar iron option? I was trying to google but couldn't find what I was looking for. How do you supplement iron?

Breastfed babies don't need iron supplements unless they have low iron shown thru a blood test.

Praise you, my friend. He said that iron in breastmilk drops off after 4 months. I wasn't prepared for this to even come up so I had no choice but to believe him. It's pretty clear that he doesn't know much about BF. I'll just keep doing what I'm doing. If a baby is low in iron, would I see any symptoms? Or should I just ride it out?

  • FWIW, I too was surprised that my pedi recommended an iron supplement when I was still EBF.  After doing my research, we chose to ignore her recommendation and didn't supplement.  They did a blood test (standard) at 1 year to check iron levels on DS2.  It came back perfectly normal.

  • DD#1 was really low at 1 year. Our Pediatrician recommended for DD#2 to take Polyvisol with Iron at 9 months. She was born early also. I give it to her (when she will take it).  I also try to give her iron rich foods.
