1st Trimester

Flu during first trimester

I'm 5 1/2 weeks pregnant with my second vhild and I have the flu. I'm worried about the affects to the baby. My fever hasn't gotten above 100.5 and that was just one day. Has anyone else experienced this? I could use some encouragement.

Re: Flu during first trimester

  • I wouldn't be overly stressed. The biggest concern would be fever so make sure you are keeping that under control and get lots of fluid and rest.

  • I was about 7 weeks pregnant with my DS and had the flu. I literally didn't leave bed for about 6 days. I made sure to hydrate and took Tylenol sparingly. I talked with my OB and she said to push fluids. I lost about 10 pounds in late 6 days.

Hang in there and it will pass. If you have concern call and speak with you OB or even a nurse and they should be able to give you reassurance and guidelines. I was very concerned about what was going on but speaking with the nurse really helped me feel better.
  • I am right there with you.  I got a nasty case of the flu, along with my husband, and 4 year old step-daughter, right at 4 weeks pregnancy.  We were all sick, but it seemed to hit me the worst, especially with the vomiting.  About 5 days after the diagnosis, I started feeling better, but then I started having constant nausea and vomiting, which I assumed was morning sickness kicking in.  But, it made it very difficult because the flu had left me with no appetite, so it had been a week since I had eaten anything substantial, and then I got to where I couldn't eat at all.  Four days of that, then my fever came back, along with chest pains, and I ended up in the ER.  I was sure it was pneumonia, but the doctor said my body just wasn't able to fight the flu like it should.  I also was dehydrated, had low blood pressure, and a mild case of acidosis.  I lost 6 lbs in a week.  I am finally feeling back to myself, but apparently myself is someone who is now 6 weeks pregnant and has morning, noon, and night sickness.  This has all been very scary since I have my first midwife appointment for 2 more weeks.  I just wanted to share that you are not alone.  And the worst thing you can do is start googling about possible effects the flu could have on your pregnancy (I made this mistake and was terribly depressed for days).
