PR I should NOT be in charge of picking bedroom furniture.

So, growing up I always had a normal bed. Just a twin. For DD's 3rd birthday we are forgoing a party and buying her bedroom furniture.

DH's train of thought is to get her something small and then then in a few years get her a nice piece of furniture (bunk beds, loft bed, storage beds etc) which in my mind means paying 200-400 NOW and then in about 5 years paying at least another chunk of change for "nice" furniture.

To be honest that makes no sense to me, I would rather pick out furniture ONCE and have her have it AT LEAST up until high school.

I was talking to my parents and they agreed with me. That is what my parents did for me. I had my bedroom furniture since I was 3 years old.

So now I am just looking all over for bedroom sets---and I am shocked at how they improved from the boring platform beds of the 80's!

Re: PR I should NOT be in charge of picking bedroom furniture.

  • We did the convertible crib thing.  It's a toddler bed right now but we're about to convert it to a full size bed.  She'll sleep in that up to young adulthood.  It was an expensive bed and sometimes I kinda wish we hadn't done it.  Just because she sleeps with me a lot.

But it wasn't a necessarily bad choice either.  Economically.
See, our crib doesn't convert. So I am in the mode of having to pick out new furniture anyway.

Honestly if money wasn't an option and I could pick out anything---this would be my choice:

DH thinks I am crazy for even looking at things this elaborate. I told him then would wouldn't need a dresser. He said we wouldn't anyway because DD has a closet. In his family growing up---the kids either had a CLOSET or a DRESSER---not both.

I honestly don't know. I was looking at one of the local furniture websites by us---of course they don't list prices. If I would guess it would probably be around 1800-2200. Just because it pretty much is a built in dresser, along with two bed frames AND the steps are drawers too. Also the bottom bed can roll out as another option.

  • Honestly, it might be worth the investment. Have you checked IKEA? I always love their storage solutions.

I looked online but unfortunately we don't have a close Ikea to us---about 2 hours away, and truthfully I don't feel like going up there because that store (at least by us) is a complete headache. And I doubt I could convince DH to look there as well.

  • That bunk bed is awesome. DS has our old full sized bed because we upgraded to a queen. I plan on getting him a more expensive bedroom set in his tweens maybe. But, we already had the bed, so why not? In your situation, I don't think it's a bad idea to go ahead and get something that will last.

I will say, I had bunk beds from about age 8 until 12. Once I hit middle school, I desperately wanted a more "grown-up" bedroom set and my parents obliged. Just something to think about.

    A boring platform bed. :P

ETA: It's a double bed, it's low to the ground so Nora can get in and out easily and I don't worry about her falling out. It's from Target or Walmart (can't remember...), and it's inexpensive, so if we hate it later or if it falls apart, I won't feel bad getting rid of it. We got her a memory foam mattress. She's been in it for a couple of months now.

See as a kid I had a boring platform bed. And we still have it. But the problem is it wouldn't work in DD's room at all--And it is 30 years old, and not in the best of shape.

I know, we will probably end up with another boring low to the ground bed--and forego any of the fancy stuff :)

But it is nice to dream!

  • IKEA's bunk bed is only $200. If you found some dresser at a garage sale and painted it a fun color, you could save a lot.

I know you said the store is 2hrs away, but it might be a good option if you don't want to spend closer to 2k.

  • We just turned Ds's bedroom into a teen room and got him a full bed with leather frame and headboard.

  • I'm glad we waited because he did a number on his room and 3yo-13yo is a long time to have the same furniture. I'd wait for the really nice stuff.
  • We bought the super expensive set from the baby boutique. Honestly, I already wish I could change it, and DD is only 21 months. Are you the type to like to redecorate a lot? If so, I would buy something inexpensive now, and wait a few years for a forever set.

  • DS1 is 2.5. We have a very low to the ground, twin sized day bed from Amazon and an Ikea mattress. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009LIYPCQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?qid=1389059496&sr=8-3&pi=SX200_QL40
Awesome for kids who roll out of bed.

I really considered doing something like this for DD, but opted for a more conservative bed and dresser.  I love the idea, but when we actually looked at something like this, I couldn't justify the price.  We ended up with something that was more boring, but better quality.  I really wanted something that she could have until she left home and maybe even take to her 1st place.  This is really cute for a little girl, but I though that she would think it was little girlish in high school.

And YH is nuts for thinking that either a closet or a dresser is okay.  That's just not enough clothes storage.
Oh I know. Like I said, no money stipulations, etc. Truthfully, I was definitely thinking of getting her furniture now and then probably by high school. (8th grade ish). My DH was thinking getting something cheap now, a better set around 5 and then something for high school.

And yeah, he is a guy---right now DD doesn't have a dresser, just a closet, she has bins in the closet for things---but it isn't feasible LONG term. But he grew up with two brothers---and money was very tight and their house was small so they didn't have much of a choice.

  • Ds was 2 when we got him a buzz light year space ship bed. It was $300 but we got it for $75 on craigslist. He's 3 and still loves it. We will sell
It when done. He still has another year in it at least. Hopefully well buy a twin and move him into that after. Nothing special

  • We bought a decent set from Ikea with a full size bed that we expect she'll have until she moves out.

  • We got convertible cribs that *should* last till young adulthood. Seems like a good investment but we'll see if they last.

  • That was my plan too, then my DS ended up destroying it so badly we had to buy him another set.  I ended up buying him a log bed on craigslist, he doesn't really like it b/c he cannot destroy it!  I will likely keep it for a few more years and when he gets older get him a set he likes better.
  • We have the convertible crib that DS2 uses but DS1 has DH's XL Full size bed from High School. He will most likely keep that unless we have a 3rd and get bunk beds for the boys to share a room.

  • Dirty lurker, but Donco Kids is having a Zulily event that started today and it's pretty steeply discounted...looks like the stuff you said you would get if money wasn't an option. Just a heads up :) Good luck!

It's a twin so it should last her several years and it can always be passed down to whatever younger siblings we'll have in the future.

I don't buy very much brand new furniture, though.
