Baby Names

Madeleine Grace or Molly Josephine?

Expecting a baby girl in May... Our top two names right now are Madeleine Grace or Molly Josephine. Both middle names have family significance to us. Big brothers are Elias Jonathan and Samuel Pierce.

Note: Madeleine would be spelled the traditional way - not Madeline or Madelyn.

Interested in others thoughts and opinions on the names and which one you'd pick...

Re: Madeleine Grace or Molly Josephine?

  • I would go for Molly Josephine if you were planning on using the more formal Margaret or Mary as the FN.

If not Madeleine Grace gets my vote.  Hooray for this spelling, BTW!

The bolded? LOVE that you're not spelling it Madelyn.

I personally prefer Molly as a nickname more than a formal name, but overall, both names are really nice.

I actually still love Madeleine, even though the popularity, but I hatehatehate Maddie.

A lot of people think Grace is a filler name as a mn, but that's no concern to me.  Having said that, I think Josephine lovely.

Can I vote for a cross between the names? Like Madeleine Josephine?

Sorry, I realize that I'm really no help right now.

  • I actually prefer to use Josephine as the middle name because it honors my husband's grandmother, who we are both very close to. However, I was concerned that Madeleine Josephine was too much of a mouthful?

  • Love the french spelling with Madeleine, but only if it is matched with the pronunciation:
MAD-e-len or Mad-e-LEN with a schwa e in the middle for both, and not Mad-uh-lin.
  • I like both! What about Molly Grace? That's my first and middle name. :)
  • I like Molly Josephine best. Madeleine is just overdone.
  • Both are pretty, but I am leaning toward Madeleine.
  • While I applaud the spelling, I can't deal with another Madeleine Grace running around.

Can I ask where in the country you're from? I hear/see a lot of things on this board that Madeleine/Madeline/Madelyn is extremely popular and overdone, but where I'm from (Northeast) I don't know of a single one..wondering if it's a regional thing?

  • Madeleine. But if Josephine were an option for the FN, then that would be my choice. Not a fan of Molly.

Madeline and Madelyn are both in the top 80 (closer to top 50) in CT, MA, NH and ME. I think it becomes more prevalent once the children are in school and there is a Madeline L. and Madelyn T. Love love the name though, but popular and has been for a few years now.

Love Josephine too! I think you can't go very wrong with any of them!

  • I would choose Madeleine Grace, but I'm biased, Madeleine is our girl name if our May baby is a girl too, it was my Great-Grandmother's name.

I'm in NC and hear that name combination constantly. How many 2-3 year olds are you around? Unless you see toddlers frequently, this name won't seem as noticeable until they are all school-aged, as PP said.

Actually, I'm around toddlers/pre-schoolers a ton! I have a 3 year old (almost 4 year old) and 1 year old... they both go to daycare. No Madeleines/Madelines/Madelyns at their daycare for as long as we've been going there (4 years, since my oldest was an infant). I also am a children's classroom teacher at our church and work with kids 0-5 at our church's children's program... none there either. Also, almost all of our friends have little kids and none of them have any Madeleines/Madelines/Madelyns either. I'm in upstate New York.

Where I'm from, Madeleine doesn't seem nearly as popular as Madison or even Addison (messed up spellings included).

Like I said, it a fine name and properly spelled. It may not be as popular right where you are and popularity might not even bother you. My mom swears that she didn't know of a single Lindsay when I was born. Lets just say I was always Lindsay P 1 or 2 In school.

Off the top of my head, I personally know 5 "Maddie Grace's". You may not plan to use the nn "Maddy", but I tend to lump all those names together and literally every other young girl I know has Grace as their middle name.

  • Madeleine Grace is lovely in a classic (not trendy) way, which is why it is a popular combination.
Molly Josephine makes me think you are a big American Girl fan.
