Signe

I'm really loving the name Signe for a girl (pronounced Sig-nee, similar to Sydney). This honors my Scandinavian heritage and I think it's lovely with some of the other names we've picked out for first or middle names. My concern is that people would pronounce it incorrectly, like SIGN, with a silent E. Would you all know to pronounce this as Sig-nee, or would you be confused on how to say this? Thanks!

Re: Signe

  • I know how to pronounce it cause i knew a signe growing up, she was a very swert lady. Signe was on my shortlist if ds was a girl.

Im interested to see what other posters say cause i would never have thought to pronounce it sign

  • I'm using Welsh middle names to honor my heritage.  I think the MN spot is a better choice for difficult to pronounce names like Signe.  She will forever be correcting people if it's a FN.

  • I flippin love it. You could consider another spelling, like Signey. I'm not sure how it's supposed to be spelled.

I LOVE it. I am also Scandinavian and we have some gorgeous names in our culture :) I don't think pronunciation would be a problem, and don't mess with the spelling!

This, please dont mess with the spelling to dumb down such a beautiful name

  • I'm no help, because I already knew the pronunciation. I really like it! I agree with pps: don't change the spelling.

  • My first guess at how to pronounce it would be sih-nyay, as in Dal Signe, the italian musical term for "return to the sign".

This was my first instinct as well, but if someone like me were to be corrected, Sig-nee wouldn't be difficult to remember.

  • I think it might be more familiar if you're in the South.  I've seen it several times before when visiting/living in Southern States.  I don't know if anyone would automatically pronounce it "Sign" but I have heard it pronounced Sig-nuh as often as Sig-nee.

  • From one Scandinavian to another, LOVE THIS NAME. I knew how to pronounce it, but the musician in me instinctively wants to pronounces it the Italian way, as well. I don't think pronunciation will be a huge issue, though.
  • NMS but regarding the pronounciation (as I had never heard this name before) I did pronounce it correctly on the first try, so maybe there won't be as much misprounounciation as you think!

  • The only reason I know how to pronounce it is because a friends sister has this name.  They have a heavy scandinavian background so makes sense.    I think a lot of people will pronounce as Sign  but with an easy correction don't think that should hold you back-  I think its a beautiful name
  • I opened this thread because I thought "hmmm I wonder how you pronounce that". I think the name will come with some correcting but if you're ok with that I think it's cute.

  • I thought Sig-nay when I saw it, but would remember Sig-nee if I was corrected, either way, my first instinct was to pronounce the g someway, sign wasn't on my radar, I think the e on the end really emphasizes that thought process.
