Moms of boys.

Moms of boys.

When are you planning on trying potty training? I had tried sitting him on the potty a few times around 13-14 months and he just wanted to play. I want to get a little toilet seat to put of the potty.

I know they say boys are harder to potty train, so I think I might want to get a head start. I would love to have him potty trained before I start nursing school in August.

Thoughts?

Re: Moms of boys.

  • We have a training potty in his bathroom and he likes playing with it. Luckily our sitter has 2 boys and says there is a 3 day method that has worked for her. I am planning to let her try to start on a Monday so that he has a full week with her method. But not sure when we will start, probably will try at 2 years and see how it goes.

  • I plan to start around 2.  My daycare provider always uses the 3 day method and says it works for her.  I plan to buy a potty seat soon and try putting him on it but don't plan to get serious until 2.

  • we had done some elimination communication when DS was younger (basically putting him on a little potty at times when we thought he would go, like after meals, and making a cueing sound that he would then associate with going to the bathroom). once he started walking, however, he got really resistant to being made to sit on the potty.

we still do the cueing when we notice him pooping, and we also let him spend some time in a shirt and just underwear, and cue him when he pees. we're hoping this will help with potty training later. as for when to start, i think we will try it once he begins to show more interest in it or is more consistently able to communicate that he is going. i will definitely start to make more of a concerted effort once he turns 2.

you might want to read more about elimination communication if you are trying to get your LO trained by age 2. this is a good book if you want some additional info.

  • Not anytime soon. OMG, just no. He knows when he's pooping or when he's already pooped, but the concept of recognizing he needs to go beforehand? Nope. I'm really not in a hurry. He won't go to kindergarten in diapers, so I'm not stressing. When he's ready, he's ready, no matter what I try before then.
  • Not even on my radar!  He just started to be able to tell us yes when we ask him if he needs a new diaper.  Like @thepretzelchick said, recognizing that he needs to go is not happening anytime soon.

  • Probably at about 2 years old. I don't want to try too early, and make the process longer. From everything I've been told, they really just won't do it until they're ready. I do want to buy a potty seat just so he gets familiar with what it is.
  • From my experience. 2 is early and around 3 is the more average age. Most people I know with kids the closer to 3 the child was the faster it just happened.
With DD1 I waited until she showed signs which was around 23 months and she pooped potty trained first and fast. It took awhile for her to fully get pee. Lots of accidents.

  • vvvvvfee's suggestion of making cue sounds. I think I will start working on recogizing when he's pooping and needs a change.

  • DS1 started wanting to pretend/play with DDs potty at just shy of 2 yrs old.  We began PTing when DS1 started going in his diaper while sitting on the potty around 2 1/2 yrs old.  He was fully PTed after a couple weeks of no diaper/no undies running around the house with only a shirt on lol.

  • our LO has recently noticed (apparently both DH and I do this) that we say I have to go pee, then go to the bathroom.  he has started saying pee pee! every time we go and following us to the bathroom.  Like other posters we have put his little potty in the bathroom, and he has started sitting on it when we go pee as well.  So we will see how this eventually progresses, we aren't pushing it though!

  • DS will be 3 in a couple weeks & I just potty trained him last month.  He was completely content in dirty/wet diapers so I knew he was not going to be an early one.  I tried for about a day & a half at age 2.5 and it was clear he wasn't ready.  I toyed with it a time or two this fall, but decided to go for it again for real the weekend after Thanksgiving.  For 2 days it was rough, but then he caught on & has had very few accidents.
