Snowmageddon 2014

There's officially 24" of snow on our balcony, school is canceled for tomorrow, with more snow on the way and temps are supposed to drop into scary territory. I'm actually considering re-scheduling the anatomy scan tomorrow just to avoid going out in it.

Anyone else snowed in? What are you doing to keep busy? We bought the crib and car seat online today, so that's been fun :) Now we're watching Star Wars and playing monopoly. I need more ideas our we're going to get a massive case of cabin fever!

Re: Snowmageddon 2014

  • Snowed in here in STL. Last I measured (about 2 hours ago) we were sitting at 9", which for us is a ton. All the schools have cancelled for tomorrow, and unless It's 60 and all the snow is gone, my pregnant butt isn't going in to work tomorrow. No reason to chance it when I really hate my job to begin with.

I've been on the computer all day playing on FB, TB and pinterest. DH pitifully claims he's getting sick, so he's been asleep since noon.

You could make snow ice cream. :)

  • We were on Thursday and Friday, but we didn't get that much snow. I think maybe a foot, a little less. It extended my winter break by two days. I can only imagine what my K students will be like tomorrow. Ohhhh boyyy. ;)

Have fun being snowed in. I laid on the couch for two days and watched crappy lifetime movies. It was bliss.

  • We have 12 plus inches here, also no school tomorrow for me (teacher).... My husband works nights so I actually stayed at my parents house last night for company & looks like I'm snowed in here for tonight also. My sister is home visiting for holidays and is supposed to fly out tomorrow (we will see). So because of that- we got bundled up this afternoon and played outside in the snow with my dogs for a bit, drank hot chocolate, and now we are lounging around... Sorry no new ideas here
  • No snow (rather new snow) in Nebraska but schools are dropping like flies for our wind chill tomorrow. My a/s is scheduled for 3pm and I am praying that they don't cancel it! I don't know how we'll manage logistics of DD, but I don't want to wait any longer.

  • We're colded in here in Minnesota. The high is -7 today and it will get down to -25 tonight. That's not including wind-child. The governor canceled school for tomorrow. I'm a teacher, so yeah!

I'm getting unpacked from our trip to see family over Christmas, catching up on work and laundry. My regular clothes won't fit anymore, so washing all the maternity stuff.

  • We are getting some snow here and super cold temps though. I'm amazed at how much people are panicking. It's January. In Michigan. It snows and gets cold. We are really not getting that much snow. You would think they are predicting several feet. This was the bread aisle at the grocery store when I went yesterday:
Wow- that's crazy! i wonder if they're really more worried about power outages? I'm in SW Michigan- near the Indiana border on Lake Michigan and we are getting pretty clobbered, but people just stay in. I'd be pretty surprised if people around here panicked like that. We're used to this level of crap.

Whereabouts in Michigan are you, @Mamarazziof3 ?

  • We got quite a few inches here in Chicagoland too. The high is expected to be -15F tomorrow! I think that's the coldest temp I will have ever seen. Everyone's talking about how their schools and offices are closing tomorrow on FB. My husband is supposed to fly to Vegas for work. Makes me really nervous. I don't know the airplane/airport ramifications of such cold temps.

We've just been hanging on the couch today watching Star Wars. I am not planning on leaving the house at all tomorrow. It was supposed to be the first day of my prenatal yoga class though, so I'm bummed.

  • I almost think I would rather take the snow you have than the cold we're experiencing in Minnesota! So appreciative of the extra day off of winter break, (teacher!) but I still have to take the dog out. It's a job in itself just to get myself ready to take the dog out for 3-5 min to do her business.
I did venture out to Caribou and Target early this morning, but DH and I made homemade chicken/gnocchi soup, rearranged furniture, researched cribs and nursery stuff, and are now watching the Packer/49er game. ( GO PACK!)

  • I am watching the Star Wars marathon too! It's still "pouring snow" here - I think our overall total will hit 18 or so inches. Hopefully roads will be ok by the time you have your scan and hopefully it isn't too far! I wish my work closed but I guess hospitals just don't work that way :(

  • I'm in GR and yeah the grocery store situation has been nuts. I just picked up a few things at the gas station when I stopped to avoid that mess. I parked my car into a pretty nice snow bank and I don't have to work til Thursday, so I think I'll just stay in my pajamas until then.
  • Windchill in ND is -60 right now, my Facebook feed is full of videos of people going outside to throw boiling water in the air, kinda cool as it immediately turns to snow. I've lived here all my life and I don't ever remember temps that cold. They never close school here and it is actually cancelled tomorrow so that's saying something.
  • DD and I have both been sick on and off since NY and I think it's possible we haven't left the house at all. It's going to be effing freezing tomorrow so I already decided to stay home sick from work. We are both cranky and bored so I'm counting down the minutes (33 currently) until bedtime.

  • I'm in central Illinois and we have probably a foot of snow now and it's windy so it's drifting like crazy. There are cancellations in all of our surrounding counties and DH and I are definitely not going to work tomorrow. So at least that means another snow day at home with DS. Just wish the power would come back on. It's only been about a half hour but I'm thinking it will be a long night.
  • Chicagoland here too. I can't believe CPS cancelled school tomorrow. They never cancel! So no work for me tomorrow yay!! I didn't have anywhere I had to be today so I just lounged and finally started putting away my Xmas stuff. And made chili for dinner! Nothing on the schedule for tomorrow either!!
  • Man I'm in South Carolina and DH and I have been saying we want snow but the amount you all are describing sounds horrible! Stay warm ladies!

This is part of the move that I am NOT looking forward to! -25?! That's just crazy. What is the weather looking like up there next week? I'm supposed to drive out there next week.

  • Tennessee and they've called for up to two whole inches. Everything is shutting down and bread and milk are gone from the grocery stores. We have it bad... ;) seriously, those of you dealing with real winter weather, stay safe!
  • I think we got about 8 inche's of snow. All the schools are canceled for tomorrow, so no work for me. DH is trying to decide if he wants to go to work or not. He has a 45 min commute. He's a little worried about the roads.

  • Over 14 inches here so far. Power just flickered out and we already lost it for 6 days over Christmas! I can't do this again!!!!! H is stranded at the hospital 2 hours away and they shut down the freeway. I wish I could drink!

High 20s at the end of this week, so I think the arctic chill will move on in a few days.

Marleybarne, which country in TN are you at?

Here in East TN, it's raining and cold. Not sure how much snow is predicted, but schools are cancelled for first day back. I hope we have inservice on Tuesday to plan...

ETA: when we moved here, I was old that east, middle, and west were so different, they were considered different countries.
  • Sorry ladies that some of you are only facing this kind of weather for the first time. I really wish I could muster up kind words, but my jealousy over the fact that this is cold for you is overriding my Canadian manners. Totally green with envy that your schools and employers actually close for heavy snow falls & cold weather.

I genuinely do hope that you all make smart choices when you do go outside, its too cold to be driving a short distance without an emergency kit & blankets. @lindseylu10 - I honestly didnt think any of the American states, other than Alaska, ever saw serious winter temperatures comparable to northern Canada (where I grew up). Dress warm!

We had around a foot of snowfall here in Detroit Metro area. College classes are canceled tomorrow so I get to stay home and relax (well, technically do laundry and work on the nursery).

And @Mamarazziof3 our Kroger was very similar on Saturday. People were buying bulk and my MIL and I were cracking up because you would think people were preparing for a "Day After a Tomorrow" like scenario!

    Edited to fix issues

  • I'm in the south so while it's cold here (windchill is -10 tomorrow - don't think it's ever been that in my life) there's no snow. There was rain tonight that might have turned into freezing rain, sleet, something. But no snow. Just a cold mess, ha.

  • I'm in Ohio. I got lots of rain and a little snow. DH told me its -21 outside and wants me to stay home. I might make cookies!
  • I saw the impressive snow missing us to the south on the radar yesterday.  In southern MN we only got enough snow for it to look like the powdered sugar on a lemon bar, but right now the temp is -23, and the "feels like" is -53.  I think the high is something like -10 or -15 today.  (The robot voice on the automatic weather channel actually said "today's forecast: brisk."  Awesome use of understatement, robot voice.)  I'm super impressed my car started for DH this morning.  His car has the car seat, so we use my car for going back and forth to work.
  • Well here in East Tennessee its 21 degrees right now and a dusting of snow and a little ice ... People are freaking out .. the stores are out of milk and bread people are calling into work and if schools were in today they would be canceled .... I still think it funny because I grew up with Chicago winters.. someone even offered to get my car because they were afraid of me walking across the parking lot ...umm its been salted and just wet ... Where were these people when I worked all night stocking shelves with heavy boxes because everyone else called in and had to work and extra hour and a half !!

  • @Storrmys Is TN one of the places they freak out about cold because they don't have enough heaters and snow plows, or are they just freaking out from not being used to it?
  • Middle tn would freak because we have a lot of back roads that salt trucks couldn't hit before school. However, they have extreme cold conditions right now. We just moved to east tn, and I'm still trying to figure out what exactly is going on... Hopefully storrmys can help out there. I don know my county's inservice is cancelled. (Yay!!)
