Yogi Moms out there?

Just wondering if there are any yogi
Moms out there and if so how you're modifying (or not modifying) your practice?

Im still going to my hot yoga (hot, not Bikram, so I'm not overheating) classes, but power flow went out the window during first tri. I do more moderately paced classes now and hatha or prenatal when I'm feeling lazy. Lately my belly has started to get in the way and my vinyasas are pretty awkward - I've been dropping
Into up dog or cobra from above and lowering into forearm planks instead of Doing a traditional vinyasa(since I'm clumsy and I'm afraid I'll fall on my belly).

So I was wondering how other yogi moms are doing with their practice? Also STMs did you practice throughout your entire pregnancy?

I'm also wondering if anyone is as dorky as me and has to suppress controllable giggles when the instructor tells the class to take "fetal pose" ;)

  • I'm still going to my non-Bikram hot yoga. I was told to avoid deep twists, so I'm doing that. I also use up dog instead of cobra in my vinyasas. Last pregnancy I went weekly until about 28 weeks. My belly was getting in the way & I was doing so many modifications that it became a hassle. My studio doesn't offer prenatal yoga, or I would've switched at that point. I may try another studio that does prenatal yoga this time to keep up till the end.

I practiced prenatal yoga last time until about 7.5 months and am taking a class now. The class has a lot of general changes such as less twists, no poses that comprimise the abdominal muscles, lots of modifications with blocks and blankets that I wouldn't normally use. I have found the blocks to be absolute life savers. My class also focuses a lot on stretches to open the hip flexors, low back, and front chest (since we are all front heavy in the belly and breast these days:) and lots of breathing exercises. My teacher is also a doula so she does a lot of interesting stuff with the breath and "simulating" how the movement and breath series we are doing is like a contraction "use the breath to get through the effort" type of references, counting down, etc. which I appreciate and there isn't too much of those, just enough to remind me to use the breath and how that affects labor later on

  • I just signed up for prenatal yoga today. It will be my first time trying it but I've heard great things! I'm excited!

  • Because I've been on/off modified bed-rest, I haven't been able to do much but I was just cleared to start getting back into the gentler prenatal stretches.

  • I go to beginning and intermediate yoga, and yoga/pilates fusion classes.  So far I have not had to do any modifications, but I have not been in a few weeks since the classes I go to have been on break between semesters (I work at a university).  When it starts back up in a week or so, I'm going to be much bigger than before, so that may change things.  I will talk to my instructors about any modifications I should do at that point.

My belly just started getting in the way! I feel like I have a wide legged stance for most poses. My prenatal teacher reccomends "twisting from the shoulders" as opposed to the whole torso - pretty sure in a few weeks I won't be doing much twisting at all!

  • I stopped my hot yoga practice immediately. I don't do Bikram but my hot yoga was still too hot to practice safely. I now practice at home and don't do any inversions or back bends. I will start going to prenatal yoga at the studio soon.

I miss my backbends! Just over the summer I got comfortable with some asanas that were pretty new to me (inversions, balances, etc) and that's definitely gone now. But I do think it will be exiting to "relearn" some poses next summer!

I didn't start doing yoga until after I had DD (besides a prenatal class).  I used to go to hot yoga, but upon the advice of my doctor and instructors at the studio stopped going there as soon as I found out I was pregnant.  I REALLY miss it.  And I miss my Power Flow class.  I just finished a 6 week prenatal class before Christmas but it really isn't doing it for me.  Its super slow paced and mostly stretching.  I went to a Flow class on Friday and it was really good.  I couldn't do up dog or cobra, but just kind of modified after chaturanga to kind of push back on to all fours and then into down dog.  I think I'll try more of those classes until the belly gets too big.  I'll keep doing the prenatal for the time being too.

Cant wait to get back to my hot studio.

ETA:  Other modifications include twisting from the "bra line" instead of the belly during twists and not as deep.  Also no backbends - although the instructor Friday said camel was fine as long as you only went as far as was comfortable for you.  And...nothing fun like crow pose, headstands, etc.
