Sophia or Sophie?

We just found out yesterday that we are expecting #2. DH is ridiculously difficult with choosing girl names. If he could, he'd name another daughter the same as our first DD. He told me yesterday he likes the name Sophia. I know it's very popular, but I really like the name too and popularity doesn't bother me as long as it's a real, correctly spelled name that we both like. I'm wondering though, do you like Sophia or Sophie better as a given name?

Re: Sophia or Sophie?

  • I like both (MH doesn't like them, to my dismay).  My only fear would be that people would always assume that Sophie was actually Sophia and you'd be correcting them all the time.

And I feel your pain - we're having girl #2 and MH has already joked that he can't think of name better than the one we already have!

  • I like Sophia. I feel like Sophie is more of a NN, not a full name. You could use it as a NN for Sophia.

  • I prefer Sophie.
  • I like Sophia best. It just seems more "proper" for an adult later on in life.  I have always thought of Sophie as more of a nick name.  So you could name her Sophia and always use Sophie as a nickname. It is a beautiful name.

  • My gma was Sophia, nn Sophie, so that's my vote.

  • I have a Sophie so may be biased but that is my preference. Both are beautiful though and real names (Sophie is the French form of Sophia if I remember correctly)

  • SS: Depends on the feel you want. Sophie is the French version, which my FI and I prefer, so I want to vote Sophie... But Sophia is a more common and familiar name (my word processor doesn't even recognize Sophie as a name).
I would advise trying the name out loud and written, see which version sticks with you more.
  • We are naming this baby girl Sophia and using Sophie as her nickname. I feel like Sophie is cuter for a little girl but Sophia ages better

  • Adore both!
But Sophia has the edge for me, it's more softer sounding.. really pretty.
