Pneumonia shot

One of my nurses told me today that they are now recommending the pneumonia shot while you're in the hospital after birth. Has anyone else heard this? What are your plans in regards to the shot?

Re: Pneumonia shot

  • That's a new one on me.

  • You mean pneumoccal vaccine? Pneumonia is a type of chest infection. Pneumoccal is a type of bacteria (sort of) . https://www.m.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/pneumococcal-vaccine-schedule

I work in health care and never heard of it (but then we tend to be a little behind). If you are worried or curious I would talk to your dr, from what I read its only really necessary if you are immuocompromised like pp.

No, she said pneumonia like what they give old people! I've never heard of having it after having a baby until today so I was curious if anyone else had.

From what I'm reading online pneumonia is caused by the pneumococcal bacteria, so I'm thinking it's one and the same?
  • Yeah the pneumococcal vaccine is generally referred to as the pneumonia vaccine. It vaccinates against some of the strains that most commonly cause pneumonia. I've never heard of a need for adult boosters, though.

Yeah, that's a first for me too. I have heard of seniors needing to be vaccinated, but not generally healthy adults.
  • Um no.

  • We give it a lot in the hospital - but really only to those who are immune compromised. And I don't mean pregnant compromised - I mean like elderly, cancer, lupus, have no immune system compromised. I wouldn't take it.

See, that's what I thought too. I mean I have asthma, but I'm not dying or anything... I was in the hospital for contractions today and she was saying that they are now recommending it to everyone after birth... I had never heard this before! That's why I wanted to hear if any of you guys had gotten the same recommendation.
