Breast feeding anxiety

Ok, so I know this sounds absolutely ridiculous, but I actually have an uneasy feeling about breast feeding this baby.. I am a STM and nursed my first (DD) with ease and no nervousness whatsoever. But with this baby (it's a boy) I am so nervous and am kind of freaking out about nursing him. I don't know if it's because it's a boy or what. Anybody else feel like this? Or am I just weird? Please no rude comments as I am fat, pregnant and emotional haha

Happy weekend everybody!

Re: Breast feeding anxiety

  • I think that some anxiety is normal.  I breast fed DS until he was 2 years old, but the first 2.5 months were hard.  It took him a long time to latch and I had peeled nipples which made it toe curlingly painful to latch.  While I am looking forward to breastfeeding again, I am not looking forward to the pain until we get things figured out together.

  • I have anxiety about BF again. I had a rough start with my last baby and had to use nipple shields. My milk came in late and she lost weight. We made it to 15 months nursing which was huge for me. But I am scared about starting out again. The stress of it. I hope and pray this baby comes out and latches without any issues.

  • I think some amount of nervousness is normal. Every baby is different. I just try to remind myself that I can do it, I've done it before for 16+mos, and I think I'm much more knowledgeable than I was last time, in the event of any issues.

  • I'm just nervous about dd being angry/frustrated that I spend so much time feeding baby. I remember realizing one day with her that I'd spend at least 8 hours nursing that day, and thinking about doing that while watching her too is a little intimidating. Hopefully baby doesn't mind mobile nursing.

  • Sounds crazy, but when I was nursing DS as a nb, I kept thinking he was a girl because I nursed with DD (and all babies look gender neutral!). I think once baby is here, and he needs you for nourishment, all those thoughts go out the window.

  • Nervousness is normal but once the baby comes maternal instincts hit and it's a whole different story! I still get nervous thinking about it but I'm not going to let it change my mind :)

  • I always get nervous about BFing but that's because I know how much pain I endure in those first couple months. If you're only nervous because it's a boy then I think there's an underlying issue there. There's no reason BFing your son should be any different than BFing your daughter.

  • Like some others have said, some nervousness is expected since every baby is different. I've nursed two babies and both had their own share of issues that I had to work though. I've nursed both a girl and a boy and honestly there is no difference. Just like the first time, make sure you have a support system in place that way if any issue arises you'll have the help you need to get though it.

  • DD1 was 19 months when DD2 was born and I was nervous about nursing but it was no big deal. I'd sit on the couch or the floor and she would just play around me. I don't remember it being difficult but I'm a very laid back person. Or i was just delirious. :)
  • I`m nervous because I ask myself "will I be able to breastfeed?" ( I really wish to be able). I`m surrounded by unsuccesful stories in my family. My mom breastfed me 3 weeks only.. She said that she had lots of milk for 3 weeks and then it just disappeared. That sounds strange to me.
