TTC After IUD?

DH and I have decided that we would like to try for our third and final bundle of love this fall.  I have had an IUD since Jan 2011 and am curious as to your experience conceiving after using an IUD.  I think I should have it removed in June/July so I can have at least 1-2 cycles before trying to conceive.  Thoughts, suggestions please.

Re: TTC After IUD?

  • Dang... I am really shooting to conceive in September (weird I know to try and plan it like that) Now I am thinking I should just go ahead and pull it but then again I will probably get pregnant within the next few months afterward. Thanks for your post!

  • I had my Mirena out and started TTC right away. I charted and used OPKs. Got pregnant with my DD on the third cycle.
  • I had my Mirena out, took one cycle off, started trying the next cycle, and conceived that cycle. So there's really no way to know how long it may take you. Sorry!
  • OP, I believe it also will depend on what type of IUD you have (e.g., hormonal or non-hormonal).

Any birth control method that operates on hormones (e.g., Mirena releases a hormone similar to progesterone into the uterine environment) may be more likely to affect your ovulatory cycle, and hence it may take your body a bit longer to return to an ovulatory routine after removal of an IUD in this category.

Other, non-hormonal IUDs do not affect ovulation (e.g., Paragard is non-hormonal, but contains copper, which alters the chemical composition of the uterine environment to inhibit the movement of sperm and prevent implantation).  So something like a copper IUD is less likely to have lasting effects beyond removal: each time you menstruate, the uterine lining is shed, therefore once the (copper) IUD is removed, your uterine environment should revert to normal.

  • I got my IUD (Mirena) out in May. It's now January and I have had a grand total of four cycles (including the one I am currently like 6 days into. Each cycle has been about two months, with one of them being closer to three months. We have bee trying (temping, OPK's Checking CM, having lots of sex during FW, etc) since the end of July with no BFP yet, which is totally normal, however my extended irregular cycles are AWFUL and extremely frustrating.  I would suggest getting the IUD out more than a couple months before the start of TTC and just using condoms until you are ready to get pregnant. I've been reading that it can take up to a year for your cycle to regulate down to a 28-32 day cycle after Mirena. I wish I would have known this before we got it out and started TTC....

It can take a healthy couple a year to conceive and still be in a normal time frame, but there is no reason why you shouldn't make it easier on yourselves by getting the IUD out well before you want to try. Honestly, I wish I would have because it has ROYALLY screwed up my cycle. Before Mirena, I had never been on birth control before in my life, and always had 30 day cycles. Like clockwork. I miss those days now....

  • I think after the more research I do, I will be removing my Mirena around May to allow me to cycle a couple times. Best of luck to those of your still TTC and thank you for your input!

  • I had an IUD for 5.5 years, which I had removed last July.  Started trying in August and got a BFP in Sept.  We had a miscarriage due to genetics reasons, but you should be good to go asap after having your IUD removed.

  • I got pregnant immediately after having my Mirena removed. I was concerned because it had actually been imbedded and I didn't think I'd have time to heal if there had been any scarring. Every woman is different, but I was told that once it comes out you can potentially become pregnant within a week. I think my situation is unusual though because I've gotten pregnant on the pill twice and pregnant within a week or so wth my DD after only one time. If you have average fertility I'd say 5 months tops. It hasn't taken anyone I know personally or have read on here any longer than that.
