keeping odor down in the diaper pail

I know a lot of you mention that your pail doesn't stink..so here's my situation.  I currently use a regular open trash can with a Planet Wise pail liner.  It's in my laundry room where there is plenty of circulation because the back door is right there and a lot of the time the ceiling fan is going to help dry wet laundry.  For the first day the dirties in there don't stink but starting right away on day two they get pretty bad.  I have enough diapers to stretch to washing every 3 days but the pail gets too stinky!  I know the easy fix would be to wash EOD.  But I thought I would see if there were any recommendations out there to keep odor to a minimum so I can stretch it to every third day.

Re: keeping odor down in the diaper pail

  • What kind of smell?

I'm mobile so I can't see your tickers. But things that might help:

    - rinse overnight diapers. This also helps with build up as well.
    - does it smell like barnyard? This is usually too little detergent. Add a little more to your wash to fix this.
    - try a warm rinse if you do cold. This helped me when I switched to 3 days.

  • Just a total pee smell, don't know if that is the same as barnyard?  I never thought to rinse the overnight diapers if they were just pee, good suggestion!  I can try more detergent but they smell clean after they are washed.  I do both my rinses in cold- the pre-rinse and the 2nd rinse after the clean cycle.  Which rinse do you suggest to do warm?

  • Side question: do any of you use a deodorizing tablet or spray each diaper before putting it in the pail? If so what do you use?

bacout on the dipes.  or you can try EOs in your pail…not directly on dipes

  • Funny....I was just coming to post the same OP. Can I tag on some questions too? I do wash EOD since I have 2 kids in ON but only the 15month old wears day diapers. What material is your diaper pail? Metal or rubber./plastic? We have ammonia smell problem....definitely in the pail after a couple of hours but not out of the dryer nor immediately when LO pees. I stripped diapers earlier this week thinking maybe we were getting tide build up, I use our diaper sprayer on the ON diapers but haven't done a soak. Wash cycle is warm/warm quick wash, hot wash with detergent and 2 cold rinses in our FL and we have had a water softener since last spring. We haven't had any problems til recently and I can't think of anything that would have changed. Thanks for any insight and sorry to hijack ;)
