Video Monitors

Anyone have vs an audio baby monitor? I thought about one for new baby because I hated the Sony audio one we had for DD#1. Yet the amazon reviews are so mixed for all of them!! And many mention issues with the wireless in there house due to the monitor. DH works from home whennot traveling, so I can't have his computer working slower than it should.Ha.

I did try to search for this topic on the board and it brought up much older posts on others.:(

Thank you!

Re: Video Monitors

  • We have used both in the house and I have found more noise interference with the audio monitor than the video monitor.

I've experienced no issues with wireless in the house. The internet wireless is not the same frequency as the wireless transmissions made by the monitors.

  • We have used an audio monitor a few times, but only when traveling.  The way MIL's house is laid out we needed it to be able to hear baby from the living room.  Other than that we have never used a monitor - audio or visual.
This.  I got a top of the line video monitor at my shower.  It's still in the box.

  • We use a Summer Infant video monitor.. Love it! I'm sure I would have been fine without it, but now that I am used to having it I would go crazy without it. It's SO nice to figure out if she is actually sleeping or just playing around, and just gives me extra peace of mind. It does occasionally make our wifi seem a little slower, but not all the time.

We have the older version of this one and really shitty Wi-Fi and I have never had a problem.  Even in the garage or across the street.  Highly recommend.
Bonus: you can have more than one camera so you can watch both kids!

  • I will never give up my video monitor. It saves me from waking DS up while he's sleeping to look at him (just to give myself peace of mind). I really feel like it was a big reason he was in his own room so early, because I could peek at him whenever I wanted.  Now he's 2 1/2 and I still love it because I can watch him sit in bed and sing or play and there have been moments that I just sit and watch him and crack up (he likes to take his socks off and use them as puppets when he's in bed). The one we have needs replaced before the new baby comes and we will absolutely be getting video again.

  • We initially used an audio monitor for DD. It wasn't really necessary. All of our bedrooms are on the same side of the house so it's easy to hear her even through closed doors. I would like to get a video monitor with a camera for each kid. At 14 months I still get up once in the night to check on DD. It used to be much more frequent!

  • When DS was a baby, we used the Angelcare monitor (audio version). I loved that thing. Once DS was bigger and in his toddler bed, we got a Samsung video monitor and I have zero complaints. I have loved both and fully intend to keep the video monitor in DS1's room and use our Angelcare again for this baby.

  • We had a Sony audio only monitor for almost 2.5 years.  It started to go out and we decided to upgrade to a Motorola video monitor last weekend.  I love it!  I love being able to see him sit up in bed and play before he falls asleep and when he wakes up.  I can check on him whenever I want without going to peek in his room and risk waking him up.

We will get another for this baby, too.  We were going to do the motorola that had two cameras and one screen, however, the lady at Buy Buy Baby told us you can only hear one audio output at a time and have to flip between the cameras to hear the other room, so we are going with two separate monitors since I can't flip between the two rooms at night and need to be able to hear them both.

  • We use the motorola one and love it - have used it every second of Lexi's life! She's almost 26 months. We rarely have issues with it, although I think it is starting to die now when it's not plugged into the wall (I guess I don't even know what type of rechargeables are in there!). Worth the money in my opinion!

We tried a video monitor, but were never able to use it. We live in an apartment and when I called the company to talk about the monitor not working they told me wireless internet, cable boxes and apple products in a close vicinity to the monitor could interfere. We ended up returning it and just use the audio monitor which has been fine.
We are screwed. DH's entire electronics collection is Apple. I'm kidding when I say screwed, we registered for a Motorola with one video camera to put above the crib, which means it probably won't be used until the baby is 6+ months old. I might even take it off. I have what DH likes to call bat hearing.

  • Check on the kind that you're getting. Not all monitors work off of wi-fi, in fact we specifically chose one that was not because if they run off of your internet then someone can hack into it (remember the family in Houston that had creepy man yelling obscenities at their daughter over the monitor?). Many run off of radio frequencies the same as a walkie talkie would, these are much harder to tap into. We use a Summer Infant video monitor and LOVE it. It gave me so much peace of mind to hear her bump or fuss and be able to check her without disturbing her or getting out of bed for that matter. Now with DD in a big girl bed, we can watch her get up and get a book and not go in and fuss at her. In fact, we had to replace our monitor and the new one allows us to talk back to her, so I can say "get back in bed" without going all the way upstairs and really getting on to her or providing reinforcement that she gets attention if she's playing around. I cannot express how much we love having the video option. Necessary? Of course not! But it made me a much calmer new mommy!

  • Get a video monitor! Priceless. But do nit get the Samsung. The microphone will go out after 4 months and you will have just video, no sound. It happened to ours and is all over the 2013 reviews on Amazon. The older model was apparently great though.

Maybe I have the older model then? We've had ours for a little over a year and have had zero complications.
