Cloth Diapering

New to the dsicussion and a question about newborn diapering

Hi everyone! I am due in June and my husband and I have decided to go with cloth diapers. I have become so into them and can't help but look at different brands and colors all the time! We have a good idea of what we are doing for the One Size diapers but I am not sure what to do about the newborn stage. We tend to have chunky babies in our family but I want to make sure I have something to fit so we don't have to do disposables. What are your reccomendations? I have heard that doing prefolds or the regular ones (I can't remember the name) that are big squares and covers is good because you can use them even in the One Size diapers and for burp cloths. What do you think? Is it worth buying newborn sized diapers in the pockets or other types?

Thanks!

  • I started CD DS1 at 4 months, we tried pockets, all-in-twos, and all-in-ones. We liked pockets best. DS2 I started at the hospital with aio (lil joeys) then pockets (kawaii pure n natural). I liked the aios for the first 2 weeks, then tried the pockets but didn't really love them. I was intimidated by flats & prefolds a before, but I gave them a go a few weeks ago and haven't touched a pocket since! I suggest buying a few prefolds to play with and see if you will be comfortable with them. As for flats, a receiving blanket is about the same size so you could use that to try out. Gl!

  • Prefolds/flats and covers are the easiest to buy knowing they will fit almost every baby. I say almost, because, J didn't fit into most NB covers for the first couple weeks. Having some fitteds is nice for MOTN changes. Pockets and AIOs are more expensive. If chunkier babies run in your family you may not get much use out of them. I would only buy them used if I were you.

  • I never fully filled out my NB stash, but if/when I do for a second child, I'm planning to have the bulk of it be prefolds/fitteds. I also have flats that I will count towards that.

If we get a postpartum doula, which I would consider since we live far away from family, I might get a few NB AIOs for that person to use. But I know DH is comfortable with prefolds so I think we would only need them if someone were helping to diaper the baby that isn't comfortable with what we already have.
  • We're just doing prefolds and covers for the newborn stage. With two babies, I primarily went that route to save money.

However, this is working well for us and has me reconsidering what to do for OS diapers.

  • We only have prefolds and flats (the regular diapers you referenced in OP) at this point. We are considering a diaper trial once the baby's big enough for one sized diapers, but might stick with what we have.

  • I like prefolds and fitteds with covers (but newborn sized covers) at first with a few aio mixed in. I don't like bulky diapers, though.

We're using mainly prefolds/covers and with some OS pocket diapers thrown in there. For us, prefolds have been perfect for DD so far. We're planning to use them until DD isn't in diapers anymore.
