Cloth Diapering

Intro/ Ointment question

Hi everyone. I've been lurking on this board for months throughout my pregnancy. LO is 4 weeks and we've been cloth diapering for the past 2 weeks (Charlie Bananas, BG 4.0 and BG Freetimes).

LO got her first diaper rash around 10 days old (red blotchiness just on her butt near her anus). We used Burt's Bees Diaper Ointment and it cleared it up in less than 12 hours. After that I knew we were switching to CD's so we started using CJ's BUTTer at every diaper change. She has since gotten the same rash another 2 times and we've had to use the Burt's Bees to clear it up. Once we use the BB's it goes away within hours.

Based on the description/reviews online I was surprised that the CJ's alone hasn't been enough to keep the rash away, but is it normal to still need another ointment on occasion? Also just want to verify that as long as I use a disposable liner with the Burt's Bees then the diapers should be okay?

Thanks!

Re: Intro/ Ointment question

  • Yes, using a liner with Burts Bees should be fine. If you use a non-disposable liner you might want to wash separate from your CDs.

To me a rash just right around her anus sounds like food sensitivity. Like maybe something is making her poo acidic. Are you BF'ing and eating a lot of citrus or tomatoes?

It is weird that CJs isn't clearing up her rashes, but it could just be that she needs something thicker that's creating a wetness barrier long enough for her to heal. You could try Earth Mama Angel Baby or Grovia Magic stick if you reallly want to find a CD safe cream that works.

  • I am EBF and now that I think about it I ate a lot of grape fruit the past two days. Is there a certain amount that is "okay" or would that be specific to my LO?

  • Hard to say. Try eliminating the acidic foods altogether, see how your LO does, and then you can try to re-introduce things to your diet slowly to see if she can tolerate them. Go slowly, and be deliberate so that if she has another reaction you'll know what caused it.

I found that I couldn't drink big glasses of OJ, but it was okay to squeeze a little bit of lemon or lime over my food. And strawberries have been a total no-no.
