Breastfeeding

low supply of bm?

So I've read that if you think your supply is low most likely its not and that your breasts have regulated to your babies feedings....well I feel like its low bc my dd (15w old) is constantly on my boob when I'm home with her. And wben I pump I only get like 1oz between the breasts like 5hrs AFTER she eats.

Has any one supplemented with formula on the days your away from the baby just so you can get ahead on bm?

Re: low supply of bm?

  • If you think you have a low supply, I would try to get your supply up.

Some of the things that have helped me were pumping after each feeding for about 30 minutes. I did it for three weeks and it definitely helped my supply, that was around when DS was 2-3 months old.

I went back to work when DS was 4 months old. I ended up needing domperidone to keep up my supply (I had tried everything else) which has helped significantly.

  • Could she be going through a growth spurt and that's why she's nursing so much? My DS started acting differently around that same time and I attribute it to a growth spurt. Maybe replace your pump parts too. That can make a huge difference.
  • I was going to say growth spurt, too. Just because LO is nursing more frequently does NOT mean you have low supply. In fact, nursing frequently is the best thing you can do to get your supply up. Supplementing with formula is the worst thing for a possible low supply.

Make sure you're drinking tons of water and let that baby nurse all day! And night! I know it doesn't sound like fun, but night nursing is actually great for maintaining supply.

  • Thanks for the advice. Ive been trying to pump after she feeds and def when she's sleeping. Not sure how long a growth spurt lasts but she's been doing this for about a week to two weeks now.

  • Stress (over pumping, supply, etc) can decrease pump output if you're not getting a good letdown. And what PPs said, too.

  • My Bm wasn't keeping up with LO demand. I could tell because he would start to get upset after a while on me, B soft and no milk was coming out with pressure. It was definitely a growth spur. I gave him as much as I could and then for 2 of the night feeds I give him formula, continued to pump after feeding the formula to keep my supply going. I rather do that than have my LO be unsatisfied, does no good for me or him.
  • Which formula r u using. This breaks my heart but I def won't cut her off completely. Its soo crazy bc with my son I had an overabundance of milk and with her ita opposite and I'm feeling so down and guilty about it.
