Smash cake and the party?

So dh does photography as a hobby. He wants to do a smash cake session with DS. The question is when? Do we set this up and do it at the party so everyone can see? Do it the day before? When are you doing the smash cake?

We are doing it at the party if its for pictures I would do another one a couple days before. So you can have some prints of the smash cake.

I would do it either before or after the party because if there's a crowd he might be distracted and you wouldn't get many good pics. Also if you do it another time you can redo or repose or move things to get what you want and take your time. You couldn't do that at the party.

We did it at the party at the very end. He was so interested in the cake that he didn't care about us! Everyone loved to see it, too!

If you are doing it for the sake of a photo shoot I wouldn't do it the day of the party.  

My birth mother wanted smash cake pics of DD so we did them this weekend.  At DD's party we will give her a cake to smash but we won't be focusing on pictures.
