Trouble TTC

1st RE appt coming up

This might be a totally stupid question, but I figured y'all would be able to best guide me....what are KEY questions or points I should be sure to mention/ask at our first appt with a RE? I always get so nervous at doctor offices and just blank....then think of a million things on the drive home!

Me:Hypothyroid DH: Type II diabetic. Together since 03/2007, Married 10/2011, D/C bc 10/2011. TTC: 11/2011. Charted BBT and CV along with OPK 10/2011-02/2012 Baseline labs 02/2012 WNL, SA 03/2012: botched sample by lab - destroyed hubby's confidence. 04/2012 Clomid 05/2012 Clomid 06/2012 Clomid 07/2012 Clomid and Ovidrel 08/2012 Ovidrel (I never knew that I was supposed to be monitored while on meds...I never was. I asked for u/s and other tests to see why we weren't getting pregnant, doc just kept giving me meds and telling me to go to his church for a "laying of hands") Stopped all monitoring/testing/temps, etc, Sex became a chore and we started to grow apart. At 12 mos I decided to look for another doc. 02/2013 consult with new doc....3 days later testing began...u/s, all good, HSG: all good, labs: all good, ovulating, etc. Started on Pregnitude. 04/2013 failed attempt for SA, 05/2013 failed attempt SA. 12/2013 SA: 3% morph, abnormal functionality. DH started Pycnogenol. RE consult 01/15/2014.

ALL Welcome :)

Re: 1st RE appt coming up

  • so many people have asked this in the past 2 months so im sure,- youll get lots of responses.

1)costs-those are always a huge thing for some couples, for example, at my obgyn-ultrasounds were free, but at the RE, its not covered by my insurance bc its deemed "infertility" now..

2)does your RE offer oop discounts, or cash discounts, or a savings program.

3)sometimes theyll want to see your charts if youve been charting, and bring any medical files of tests youve had done

4)the RE will probably focus a little more time to develop a game plan for your husband as well.

5)they are so used to obgyn referrals, they will most likely be asking WAY more questions to you, then you have for them.

6)if youll need an hsg, most likely your RE will order one to be done, as well with DAY 3 bloodwork, and the normal test youve probably had done already. .

you could ask her why she thinks clomid was unsuccessful for you, and what approach they'd like to take, idk a couple of the girls told me to jot down questions and take them into the RE, my appt was about 3 hours. start to finish. but every RE is diff.

also be prepared to have a U/S done that day.

  • Everyone's first appt is a little different.  I got to keep my pants on for mine!  When I made my initial consultation, I asked what to expect and was told to expect a simple medical history along with height/weight/blood pressure.  If time permits, you might want to call and ask.

I really wouldn't stress too much over the initial appt.  It looks like you've had a lot of testing done, but the RE will likely re-do the CD3 tests.  I'm guessing you'll have a follow-up appt in a few weeks to go over all of your new testing results and formulate a plan.

If testing your AMH is not suggested, I would inquire about that.  AMH (along with FSH and AFC) gives an idea about your ovarian reserve.  Ask about immunity testing.  For example, despite having chicken pox as a child, I was not immune.  I chose to get the vaccine which benched us for about 2 months.  Also ask about supplements.

Good luck!  I hope you love your new doctor and the appt goes well!

    ~All Welcome~

  • By the time my GYN sent me to the RE, I had already been through all of the testing, so my only question was how many cycles I would be trying before moving onto the next step. I had a Pcos diagnosis, but after an ultrasound, the RE thinks I don't have that. Ask for pamphlets to read, or ask if they have a website that can also help you with any questions. Good luck, it's definitely a whirlwind of info, take time to let it sink in and write down questions.
