Medela Symphony rental!?

I got a Medela Advanced pump for free through my insurance but I feel as though it's a total piece of shit. It takes me well over a half hour to get only 2, maybe 3 ounces. So I've been looking into renting the Symphony. Have any of you rented it and had a difference in how much you pump or do you notice you can get the regular amount you pump quicker?

Thanks in advance :)

Re: Medela Symphony rental!?

  • I didn't get any difference in the amount. Sometimes it was a little while to get used to using a pump. I rented one when DS was in the NICU but I would pump the same amount with both Medela pumps. If your LO is in the hospital everyone recommends using the Symphony but if you are all home you probably don't need it. Just remember that LO can get more milk out than you can pump. @AmyG* has talked a lot about pumping on the BFing thread and there is lots of discussion on the BFing board too that may help. Good luck!!

  • I'm renting the Symphony due to lactation insufficiency and found I'm able to produce about the same amount with the pump as the baby feeding (10-20 ml a breast).  I don't know if the results would be the same for someone who has a normal supply but I was impressed that my weighted feeds were producing the same amount as the pump given everything I've heard about pumping not being able to drain as much as a baby.

  • I rented the Symphony for the first month and am now using the Ameda Purely Yours that was free with my insurance. The Symphony is a great pump - it was very efficient (it's partially to blame for my current oversupply/OAL problems). However, I've had a pretty similar experience with the Purely Yours; it just took some getting used to since you have to do the settings yourself. The LC I talked to said that if I was having any issues with supply (which I'm not) that investing in a nice pump is worth the money but if supply is not an issue then I should be fine with the one I have. I know kellymom has some info on how to get more milk when pumping: https://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/pumping/pumping_decrease/. I know you haven't had a "decrease" persay but it might help. You could also take it to a lactation store and have the suction tested. Perhaps your insurance would replace the motor if it's faulty?

  • I too rented a Symphony for while my son was in the NICU. All the lactation consultants reccomended it. When I returned it after a month I switched to my insurance issued Medela Advanced and noticed no difference. 2-3 oz every three hours is about what I get, which is just keeping up with his consumption. (Exclusively pumping for now, he is 11 weeks old- 3 weeks adjusted)

  • I rented one and it is 100x better than the medela PISA. GET IT. It's awesome & cuts pumping time in half at least.

  • I am only able to pump a total of a 3/4 of an ounce to 3 ounces each pumping session. Which is nowhere near what lo needs. It sucks and we have to supplement with formula.
  • I had my LO 2 weeks ago (I'm a jan14) and started using the symphony right away (NICU). The other day we were out so I tried the PISA and there was a huge difference in how much I got. In 20 minutes I got .25oz (each side) compared to 3-5oz with my symphony.
