Dog owners living in apartments.

This question is for dog parents that don’t have a yard. How do you take your dog out if you have a baby? This may sound silly but im seriously wondering about the logistics of it. Specifically in cold weather. So if you come home from work and have to take your dog out on a leash to go to the bathroom what do you do with your baby? Do you bundle them up and baby wear them? We have a back yard now but will have to move this fall. We have a good deal now and a fenced in backyard but don’t know if we will be lucky enough to find that again. We may have to move into an apartment and will have a small baby. Im not sure what i would do when i come home from work. Thanks for your imput!

  • When we were in that situation, I put my DD in her moby wrap.  She is a January baby.  We took shorter walks, but it was fine.

  • I would get up early to take him out while dh was home if at all possible. Otherwise I'd tuck baby into a carrier and go. My dog goes on command so it'd be less than ten minutes outside.

If DS was asleep (like after bedtime or during nap) and the dog needed to go, I'd take the monitor and lock the door and go, but I know not everyone is okay with that. We lived in the third floor in a secure building and the monitor easily reached the grass outside our building.

  • We were in an apartment for DS's first year.  Depending on the day, I either wore him while walking the dogs, or just bundled him up in his stroller.  Walking 2 dogs with a stroller isn't fun, though, so it was usually babywearing for me unless I knew DH would be home soon and I could wait for him to take the dogs out.
  • It depends on the location of the poop area to the door.  If I will be only a few feet away from the door, I will leave them inside.  If the poop area is far away from the door or is out of sight I usually would bundle and put in a stroller.  It was much easier for me to bend over to pick up the poop without a baby strapped to me, although sometimes I did that.
