did I traumatize my baby?

So I've been through bouts of biting previously (2 months ago). She did it a few times, I would take her off and say no and after a minute or two get her latched on and it passed. Well biting is back on hardcore. She bites and then laughs. I try to stay calm, unlatch her and then try again after a few minutes. I'd try doing this and distracting her, telling her "no biting, it hurts momma.." I've tried to ignore it and don't show any reactions...

Well today she bit and bit for her 5 pm nursing. Everything I tried didn't work so I aborted it. Then after bath before bedtime she always nurses and goes to sleep. Well she bit and again and again. I unlatched her..told her no biting...tried to hold her for a few minutes, sing to her...gave her a teething toy to bite.. nothing worked, she kept laughing and wanting the boob to bite it...finally I did the push the face in the boob and she first thought it was funny and laughed again when I did it a second time she freaked out! Then after that she didn't want the boob at all. I tried everything to get her back to the boob but she refused to latch. So I just hugged and kissed her and put her in the crib and she went to sleep.

Now I am so very worried that she is going to think boobs mean getting her face shoved into the boob and she wouldn't want to nurse again tomorrow either like tonight.
This is a first. She has always nurse before bedtime. I'm so worried I don't think I can sleep tonight. Did I traumatize her by pushing her head into the boob to get her to unlatch from biting?

Re: did I traumatize my baby?

  • I have no experience with biting but...I would be SHOCKED if your baby will have trouble nursing tomorrow. I don't think you traumatized her, she will always want her mama :) I'm sure of it.  I have had a couple of weird bedtime nursing nights too where DS just didn't seem too interested in nursing AT ALL and would basically squirm and fuss until I cuddled him and put him in his crib. I think there was one night I didn't sleep either worried about the same thing you are!  I am wondering if she just wasn't all that hungry and was playing with you...and then got tired and was like "okay mom, ready for bed!" kind of cry.

Let us know how it goes tomorrow- but go try to get some sleep in the mean time :)

  • I think she will be ok, and I hope you got some sleep. That biting HURTS, it's no joke.
