Foods to avoid, what about wine?

I know what are the basic foods to avoid during pregnancy...but what about a glass of red wine here and there? I've heard many of my friends tell me that ther drank a glass ocassionally when they went to a special dinner or holidays. I just want to be extra sure is safe!...I'm 10 weeks pregnant and already heard a heartbeat and everything is going perfect. Thanks!

Re: Foods to avoid, what about wine?

  • Most people avoid because there is no scientific evidence showing how much alcohol is safe to consume during pregnancy (if any). Because of this; some doctors think a glass here and there will not harm, some believe opposite. Do what you feel comfortable with.

  • My midwife has said after 28 weeks a small (4 to 6oz) of red wine is alright. She said no hard liquor, beer or blonde wines. She was talking about the tannins etc in the red wine.

Some women choose to cut out wine completely. There is no medically safe amount to ensure your child will not have FAS. The only way to ensure that is to abstain.

I personally have a very strong aversion to the smell of alcohol during all my pregnancies. I can't cook or really even be at the same table if I can smell the booze with my super nose. It sent me straight running for the nearest rubbish bin or bathroom. So for me it's a non-issue.

I don't care what others do as long as they aren't bragging about getting wasted while pregnant. That is irresponsible. I don't know anyone that would do that though.

  • Thanks so much to all of you!! I think each of us have to have our own criteria about these things...there are so much info online and sometimes is so confusing. Thanks again ladies!
  • My doctor gave me the okay for wine after the first tri but it gave me such horrible heartburn that I didn't want to drink anything.

  • I can't imagine wanting a glass of wine enough to take the risk. It is such a risk that if I was near a glass and I even had a fleeting thought about taking a drink, I would immediately say to myself, "Really? Can l really not live without alcohol/wine/whatever for nine months of my life for the sake of my unborn baby's safety? Regardless of what a doctor would tell me "might be safe",  I wouldn't give my newborn alcohol from a bottle, why should I give it to baby in the womb?

Just my opinion of course :)

@Bliss+Berry Gag away my love. That's my opinion and I'm sticking by it.

I do not distinguish between the two in this instance.  Please tell me how you would.  Think of me what you will, but really, I can lay off the sauce for 9 little months.

  • Wow.  Such hate in your heart for someone you don't even know.  Calm down little lady, name calling is for those who can't come up with a counterargument.

  • I guess you couldn't tell me how you could distinguish between the two.

  • Likewise.  Check the hate at the door babe. I know you're hiding behind the internet, but really, hate and name calling is totally not flattering.

  • Bliss and Who, I am not as schooled as you (apparently) and didn't tag you.  However, I would assume that two educated gals like yourself would be able to take context and see who my replies go to.  It is obvious Who is the one who is name calling. And uh...dislike your post? I never said I dislike it.  I think I told you to cool your jets before you overheat.

  • OK, I'll bite. I can understand that this can be a touchy subject. No one throws down like this over deli meat, or sushi.... or even coffee, for that matter.

Here's some research from Harvard for  those of you who are asking for some research:

  • Yes.  I also think I better not eat that chicken sandwich for lunch because I wouldn't give my newborn a chicken sandwich.  I also think that toast I ate for breakfast was totally inappropriate. Perhaps I should also not drive anymore because I wouldn't let my newborn drive (the nerve of me going to work!)

Thanks for the banter ladies.  It was my pleasure to indulge you all. If you would like to continue reading way too much into an anonymous internet post, I would only be too happy to come back later and read them.

  • I never drank when I was pregnant with DD. But, I did have a glass of wine sometimes after I was done breastfeeding her for the day.

  • LOL. Isn't this the second poster who compared a glass of wine to putting alcohol in a baby bottle? FFS. No. Not the same thing. The stupidity... can't handle it...

  • I had a glass of red wine every Saturday night in my 2nd and 3rd tri. Really looking forward to that again this time!

  • In my first pregnancy, I had a 1/2 glass of champagne at 7 weeks, and then after the first tri I would have a drink once a week or every other week. Baby came out perfect, except for this one defect: he is the cutest person that ever lived. It's a real problem. Anyhow, I will probably do the same this time.

  • I've been drinking alcohol free or alcohol removed wine. Tastes just like the real thing- I wouldn't however recommend drinking the whole bottle- got a very upset tummy and some cramping at the end of the night :-/
  • I've had a glass and once even two. I've been backing off lately because it seems like it's been giving me really bad heartburn and an upset stomach, but it really helps relax those hormones.

    It's a BOY

  • The fact is there cannot be a study to see whether any amount of alcohol is ok for fetus development because it would be an unethical study group, so a blanket warning is issued. Different doctors have different opinions and you have to decide for yourself.

For me, I was comfortable with a glass of wine each week in my 2nd and 3rd trimesters with both pregnancies, with the ok of my doctor and after talking to my sister, who is an OB-GYN.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • To each his/her own...what works for one may or may not work for another.  My sister is a physician and has successfully completed 2 pregnancies with the occasional glass of wine and I have two gorgeous nieces who are growing well and developing normally.  As someone had already said- do what feels right for you.  The important thing is not to pass judgment on others that think a certain way or do something that you may or may not agree with.  This is meant to be a supportive environment right???

    A new adventure
