Juicing

Does anyone here use a juicer? I used mine all the time before pregnancy but read somewhere that unpasteurized juices are bad and could carry harmful bacteria. I guess there's germs on fruit/vegetables/root vegetables (I read it's in the dirt?). Has anyone heard that juicing isn't safe? I have an appointment in two weeks and don't want to wait to an answer from ob. I'm craving all things fresh right NOW! Haha

Re: Juicing

  • I would say it is fine, but I am no doctor. You would be eating the fruit/veggies un-juiced, right? Then I don't see the difference in eating them vs. drinking them...

Good for you for eating so healthy!

  • I think the nutrients you need may be in the pulp you are throwing out.

  • I was juicing before I got pregnant. My Dr said it's healthier to eat the vegetable straight. When juicing you lose the fiber and some nutrients in the pulp and end up consuming more calories without all the added benefits. Makes sense. But I don't think it's bad for you. He also said it was super important to thouroughly wash all fruits & veggies before hand no matter what.
  • I juice every once in a while. As others have said I'm assuming that if I would eat the fruit raw, drinking it's juice won't kill me.  I also use the pulp that's left in the machine and make quick breads and muffins etc. which I highly recommend.

  • I still juice, my doctor said it was fine, just wash all produce well. She warned against getting the fresh juice from supermarkets - the juice is unpasteurized, sits for up to 24 hours, and you can not see the conditions to know if its sanitary or how long it sits before being refrigerated. I don't go to juice bars, so I didn't ask about those.
  • Juicing yourself is totally acceptable because you know you washed the produce thoroughly. It's when you buy unpasteurized juice elsewhere that the sanitation might become an issue.
  • Thanks all! That's an excellent tip to put the pulp in muffins or bread, I will be doing that. Do you have a good base recipe for that? I will be resuming my juicing today. Thanks again!! :)
  • I blend instead of juice and that way I get to keep all the nutrients lost in juicing. Juicing tastes better but I digress. LOL!

I don't have a specific recipe I use. I usually just google something like "juicer pulp quick bread". There are tons and most are pretty similar. I just dump all the pulp in and see how it comes out!
    Enjoy!

  • Side question: has anyone had experience or know if "gently" pasturized juice is safe? Like Naked bottled juice?

  • @jmejolee83 - I would this so. Its still pasteurized, just not ultra pasteurized, so it does not have the shelf life. Still heated enough to kill all bacteria. If you hear otherwise, please share! Naked is a go to snack for me if I'm out without my own food.
