RP: Quick question

I think I have a yeast infection (not sure haven't ever had one before), I haven't seen my OB yet my first appt. is on the 6th. I am about 14 weeks. (Est. off ultrasound from a stand alone pregnancy clinic)

Would this be something to go to the ER with it wait out till Monday? No walk in clinics around, and I go to work at 3pm and won't get off till 7am Monday.

  • I second calling your OB.  A nurse will probably tell you to take Monistat or something like that.  They just have specific recommendations of which ones to take.  I have had yeast infections in pregnancy before and always treat them over the counter under an OB's direction.

You can call your OB. They should be able to tell you what's safe OTC. Even on a Saturday. They should call you back.
This! If you don't have an OB line maybe there's a nurse line you can call? They should be able to order you prescriptions over the phone too. Feel better!

  • I would not risk exposure to all kinds of crap from the e.r. for a yeast infection. Id just get some Monistat.

  • No nurse line. I don think they would prescribe anything without seeing me first but on the way to work I will grab something from the store.

  • If Monistat is on the OK list from your doc, grab it! It's way too long to wait until your appt. you'll be miserable by then! Along with the Monistat, grab a tub of Fage plain Greek yogurt and start making a habit of eating a serving daily!! I'm susceptible to YI too and (knock on wood) have been keeping them at bay with lots of yogurt!
  • You really should call them before you self-medicate. You only think you have a yeast infection. You don't want to take Monistat if you have something else.

This. My doc's rule of thumb is if you have one before, you definitely know when you have one again, so go ahead and treat with OTC meds that are okay during pregnancy. But, if you haven't had one, I'd say call your OB and have them squeeze you in for a quick check. The OTC meds likely won't hurt you if it's not a yeast infection, but it could throw off the balance of things in there and make things more uncomfortable for you. Or, if you have a trusted urgent care that you know isn't too busy/germ infested, I'd go there.
  • They also sell a kit that you can test from home to see if it is a Beasty Yeasty. That way you could check to see if it is if you're worried about self-medicating.

  • Thanks ladies. I will grab some on my way to work. Not open and keep the receipt. I forgot that we have some of those test kits to test for YI. (I work in a nursing home). And then double check with one of the nurses.

  • Just call your doc. I had one when I first found out I was pregnant and called and they told me 7 day Monistat was ok, just not to use the 3 day one.

  • I had one my first visit, my dr told me to get monistat 3, because its cheaper than a prescription. I was 8 weeks at the time.
  • You can call the ER. Don't go there bc it's not an emergency but if you call they should be able to get someone to help you!

  • I had one, my dr's told me to get OTC Monistat 7. If that doesn't clear things up to call them back. Yeast infections are very common at this stage.
  • If you don't mind my asking, what are your symptoms? Keep in mind that during pregnancy your body will produce a ton more vaginal discharge. If it doesn't have an odor or itch and is not yellow or green it's probably just pregnancy. Taking unnecessary medication can throw your body out of pH balance. If I ever feel I'm getting a yeast infection I eat a bunch of yogurt and that usually nips it in the bud. The live active cultures in yogurt help naturally balance the levels of bacteria and yeast production. I'm not saying that this is a go to cure, just that it usually works for me. If you strongly feel it is an infection call and see if the office can move up your visit, I wouldn't let it go untreated for a week and a half.
  • I currently have a YI, but didn't know it. I only found out after I had a good amount of bloody mucus come out while going to the bathroom. Freaked me out. I was away from my home state and called my OB who told me to go to the ER. Found out there it was a major yeast infection that had irritated my cervix and vaginal walls, causing bleeding. Not fun. Using OTC monistat 7 day to treat.
